Horrible incident whilst hacking yesterday

This happened to a friend of mine yesterday while she was out for a hack with her daughter.

They were nearly home- almost opposite the yard entrance. I was in the yard so heard all the shouting!

So, nearly home and heard a car flying up behind them. The yard is on a country lane which has fairly fast traveling traffic but this stretch is straight so we can easily be seen.

Without really slowing down, one of the passengers in the back of the car (all youngsters) fired something from a catapult at my friends horse. It hit him on the shoulder and he had a lump the size of a walnut which he was quite sore on. it must have hit him really hard to cause a lump that big.

Luckily he just jumped slightly and didn't react as some might of done (like I'm sure the passengers were hoping!) but they sped off laughing.

She said they were going so fast she couldn't even see the number plate.

Why are some people so evil?

That is disgusting, thank god the horse is quite evidently very calm to have only jumped a little, sounds like it must have hurt, its frightening to think what you might meet hacking

This is horrible!!!! Glad they were OK it could have been so much worse if the horse hadnt been so good.
Its disgusting how people just have absolutley no regard for horse or rider and how dangerous this sort of behaviour is and why do people feel they can do this just because it a horse??

Everytime I think I have heard it all, there is some new, horrible story! I can't imagine how dim-witted, cruel and outright dangerous someone must be to do that.

Really glad your friend's horse did not react, mine would have pissed off at 100 miles per hour and gotten us all killed.

Is there any way she can drive around and see if she can spot the car? Might be worth reporting it to the police anyway so that there is a record of it.

I know, so thoughtless and cruel.

Just wish she'd have got the number but the speed they were going, it was impossible.

Just thank God they didn't get his eye or it could have been so much worse

She knows the make and model of the car, and the colour so I think she's going to let the police know just incase they're known in the area.

Not that they'll do anything....

that is down right nasty poor horsey and rider how upsetting for them, hope next time they go out poor little horsey wont be too upset.
Glad they are both ok....

words can't describe people like that.....

OMG!!! What are some people bloody like!!!!????

This story would of been far worse if something like that was done to my horse or a horse similar. I am just sat here furious at this. Have they no idea of the damage this could of cause (and have caused to that poor horse)

What is going on inside peoples heads today? I mean really, who does stuff like that?

I am glad everyone is OK-ish - luckily the horse is a saint.x

That's disgusting - little tw@ts should be given a good kicking (allow me!).

I wouldn't have stood a chance. Bob's not one for taking off but I think he would have in this instance.

On a more positive note, we met a very understanding chap who was towing a stock car behind us on a narrow country lane - he did restore my faith somewhat.

Poor horse! Must've been quite a shock for your friend too. Perhaps the police will take it more seriously if your friend explains the projectile might've hit her instead?

There's something seriously wrong with some people.....

When i was about 15 i was riding through our local coutry park and a few boys starting firing fireworks at my pony - we were both terrified they were so loud and my poor pony flipped and bolted with me - luckily i stayed on and managed to stop before the roads by heading her best i could into a forest type of path where she had to stop, and after that she was so terrified of fireworks night - i was lucky she wasnt hurt but i couldnt believe that it had happened it really put me off of riding out for a while after that. My 'bombproof' pony certainly wasnt bombproof after that.

Yes - International Velvet style!
I had a woman come past me at breakneck speed towards a bridge on a blind spot. I waved my hand up and down to indicate to her to slow down but all she did was turn round after the bridge and have a go at me: "Who do you think you are telling me to slow down? What right have you got - you're all the same you stuck up horse-riders? There's no speed limit on this road, I can go as fast as I like!"
I just told her I was trying to warn her about the blind bend and the bridge but she wasn't having any of it!
Sadly there are more idiots out there on the road than ever.

Thats foul!!!
We had one the other day, where a group of school kids spat out of a bus on our horses! They are all about 99% bomb proof but they are jumped out of their skin! We were livid!

That is appalling! Some people really are beyond belief you wonder what on earth they get out of such behaviour.

So glad you and your horse were not hurt but pity you did not have enough to report them on. Agree may be worth reporting what you can just in case it matches in with any other reports of such loutish behaviour.

Actually, I had forgot that 5 years ago when I first got his lordship, a bus full of children (gits) stopped opposite me on the road, they opened the windows and proceeded to hiss loudly at us, I hadn't had him too long and only just got over broken collar bone, he did get wound up and had me worried, I would definately have got myself into big trouble if I had got hold of them

They're probably known to the police so she needs to report them.....I disagree that they wouldn't do anything

I had something similar happen to me. There were 3 cars behind me on a country lane (no problem and plenty of room to overtake) and the passenger in the first one stuck his head out of the window and shouted loudly at my horse with the intention of having her chuck me off in the road. Luckily she shot forward but in a totally straight line. I got the car number and immediately reported it but the police had no record of any such car existing. Bearing in mind that my horse is only 15.1hh and I'm 5'4", it was winter and I was wrapped up, I could easily have been a child out riding. Unfortunately there is a large and pretty notorious council estate not far away, and all the scrotes from there race around the lanes in their bangers. The number of crashes on the bend by the farm is unbelievable. I live in hope that they will kill themselves.

Some advice to you all.....
Find out who your local Rural Community Police Officer is (get the details including his E-mail address from your local police station) and report any incidents to him as he will have better local intelligence of your immediate area. It has always suprised me how many of the vehicles I have reported have false number plates so a description of the vehicle and driver is always usefull. My local Rural Community Police Officers produce a monthly E-mail newsletter which makes interesting reading..
