"Horrific accident on Saturday" - Horse Update

That wound is looking good already. Hope the blood supply remains intact and then it will heal quite fast I think.

Last Spring I went on a horsey holiday in Exford, Exmoor.

On one of our rides we came across a 'gate latch' test being done in association with the Council and BHS I think.

Along this bridlepath there were approx 10 existing gates. And they had used all manner of latches and known horse gate fittings.

Some we just couldn't work out at all !!!! Even though each had a printed explanation of how to use!!

The one we found easiest/safest was the traditional Exmoorian catch of a large but shallow hook attached the the gate on a couple of chinks of chain, and a round circle of protruding metal on the gate post to hook it into, not viciously sharp - would give you a bruise if you got squashed against it - set quite high so you could reach over from either side,

Albeit it required someone to physically latch it rather than letting it swing shut, there was little that horse or rider could get caught in or impaled on because the hookie bar was shallow enough to slip off most bits of tack, or so we thought, if we were to get caught in it.

Twas a very good idea I thought.

my horse was on his way to impaling himself on one of those latches last year, it was like it happened in slow motion - i was leading him through the gate and i saw his side pressing on the edge of it and i screamed and pushed him off as hard as i could (he's 16.1hh) and i actually pushed him into a ryne next to the gate which i then had to panic cause i thought he wasn't going to get out, but at least i saved this sort of injury - it looks horrific. the gate has been removed now thankfully - good luck with the council, they should listen to this surely.

Wow - the vets have done a fantastic job there. Hope he's feeling brighter now, that is a really awful thing to happen to him

You should contact the landowners where the gate is and let them know
 
I read your original post and had no idea it was that bad!!! Thats incredible when you think it could happen to any of us, just from a gate. I hope he mends quickly, looks such a lovely boy, sending healing vibes to him xxxx

I didn't read original post at first, as i never want to read about accidents, it makes me think about what could happen.
Read it now though, what a terrible thing to happen, that is a huge amount of damage. Loks like the vets have done a tremendous job os putting him back together. He looks lovely, i hope he recovers well and quickly.
