Went on hack today with 5 other horses. I was one but last when we all trotted. The person behind me tried to squeeze past my 4yo without warning and her mare threatened him with her rear. He retaliated in an instant and kicked out breaking her rear leg above the hock. It was truly horrific. Her leg was dangling and bleeding. We mobiled for a vet but after 10 minutes of waiting a local farmer came out and shot the mare. I am beside myself with grief for owner and horse. Feel so guilty even though I know it was not really my horses fault. Just had to get if off my chest really.

OMG, that is just tragic. ((hugs))

Sounds like the kind of thing that could happen to any of us, don't blame yourself.

A freak tragic accident

However tragic these things are, they DO happen and can honestly happen to anyone at any time. Don't beat yourself up about it, although I understand how awful it must've been for you.
I hope the owner of the mare isn't blaming you!

Gosh how tragic

I really feel for you and all involved, but you certainly shouldn't feel guilty, it wasn't your fault. H. x

I am so sorry to hear this... but like others have said, it was an accident and one that could happen to any one of us. I hope you and your horse are ok.

You must feel dreadful, but the reason everyone is taught to keep a horse's length between them and the horse in front is exactly what happened today.
Horses do and will kick out especially young ones, their natural defence in the field is to retaliate, and often the first time they do it is the only opportunity you get to tell them it isn't allowed under saddle.
It was a silly mistake by the other rider and you must not feel the slightest bit guilty, it's not on to attempt to squeeze through gaps...
Feeling sorry for the owner is natural, but you couldn't have known he would kick like that.

Oh my gosh!

What a horrible thing to happen to all of you. I imgine you are very shook up. I am so sorry it happened. Certainly not your fault though.

I feel so badly for all of you involved.

RIP poor mare and my thoughts are with you and her owner

Horses will be horses though and it really wasn't your fault.
I suppose we can't expect a vet to arrive within a few minutes, but waiting in those circumstances just makes the whole thing worse.

What a tragic accident

, but that's all it is - an accident. You are not to blame and nor is your horse. It doesn't stop you feeling terrible though, so big hugs to you.

I am so sorry to hear what has happend and thank goodness a farmer came to the rescue, they are experienced and quick with dealing with large animals.

Really sorry about what you have been through. It is not quite the same but my mare kicked the woman who was clipping her in the face and smashed her cheekbone and eyesocket leading to a blood clot and a 6 hour surgery. She is on the way to recovery now, but it was hard not to blame myself - but it was an accident as was what happened to you.

Big hugs to you.

Oh god, how awful for you and all concerned. Please don't blame yourself, it was a freak accident and not your fault.

*Big Hugs*

Thank you so much everyone. I guess deep down I know my boy is not to blame but its so hard when you know that a horse died as a direct result of your horses actions (even if it was deserved). I have to put it behind me and get up tomorrow and walk Blue out to see how lame he is. (He got caught by mare). In a way it makes it easier that he got kicked (crazy but true). I have to move forward and get over it. Thanks again. Your comments have really helped me. xx

Thats truly awful

What a horrible thing to happen but as everyone else has said, its simply a horrible accident and you arent to blame. I hope your horse is sound in the morning.
