Horrific accident out riding today

What a dreadful thing to happen

But you know this was not yours or your horses fault. Horses WILL kick in situations like this, unfortunatley the ultimate price was paid in this instance. Obviously your chap has not done this before or you would have known to warn others or keep him at the back. So what more could be done...nothing. It was up to the rider at the back to keep her horse a safe distance.

I hope that the girl won't blame you for the accident but will accept it as the dreadful tragedy that it is.

Huge hugs to all concerned. It is an awful situation to be in and I can only guess at your distress.

It was a tragic accident and I really feel sorry for you and the horse that ended up losing its life.
I agree that you are in no way to blame and neither is the horse you were riding.
The only person to blame is the rider of the mare because they should have been experienced enough to have known never to try and do that when on a hack, or riding in general.
I know jockeys squeeze through gaps when at flat out gallop but that is different as horses won't usually kick out in that situation.
I have never attempted to squeeze past a horse when hacking and if the one I was riding got too close to the one in front I would always pull back, so as to avoid any kicks that may occur.
I hope you can move on from this terrible incident but please don't attribute any blame on yourself as you were not at fault

This is an error in very basic horsemanship from the other rider/owner - we all make mistakes, and learn from them, but you really should not feel responsible.
