HORRIFIC looking accident

Oh god that poor horse, cant believe its up and walking around after that, I thought it was dead at first!!!! Kudos to the emergency services

Definitely heart in mouth stuff.

Poor horse, I was so sure he was either dead or the vet was putting him to sleep.

How awful for all the owners/drivers involved.

I would love to know if he made a full recovery.

Its German here is the translation of the description:

Firefighters and veterinarians fight for the rescue of horses in a road accident in Olpe / Rhode the horse was injured. Hats off to the benefit of all parties.

I think from this the horse was ok.

There are some comments on the link which suggest that the accicent was unavoidable, that the horse was too big for the trailer and over the towing weight resulting in the death of the driver from the other car involved.

I dont speak German..(although studied it for 7 years), there are some english comments in there :D

I used Babel fish to translate the text below, but it doesn't actually say what caused it or how the horse was afterwards. Worked out that the horse had been sedated and not as I first thought - but that was a Jeep that had completely jackknifed.

A positive example, was fire-brigade and veterinary surgeons for the rescue one with a traffic accident in Olpe/Rhode injured horse does. Hat off before the achievement of all involved ones

Can't have been over the towing weight - Jeep could pull that easily. What MIGHT (pure conjecture) have happened is IF the Jeep was going too fast, it could have snaked if the trailer was lightweight/got caught in a tailwind, but the fact that the chesnut was a big horse suggests that might not be the case.

Awful that someone died in that accident though.

God how horrific.. everyone's worst nightmare, really cant believe its walked away.
What a fantastic rescue.
Hope its ok,when the sedation wears off

This evening I thought what a hassle it was running a 7.5 tonner. After seeing that I remember why I won't travel horses in a trailer or even a 3.5 tonner unless it is unavoidable.

Some of what I read....

This video first appeared on Horse Trailer World,a website where many people with experience towing horses are members . (and Europeans have NO market cornered on towing animals in small trailers behind vehicles totally unsuited for the purpose,by any means).

If a person is going to haul an animal that combined with the trailer, weighs as much or outweighs the vehicle's GVWR,they need to know the risks they are taking with others' lives. That is obviously what took place in this incident

Forget the horse, why?? The horse didn't ask to be put in this damn tiny trailer, most likely driven at speeds in excess of what's recommendable for a tiny trailer & too light a towing vehicle!!! I feel VERY sorry for the humans involved, but to say "forget the horse", the animal had not say in the entire audeal whatsoever!! Europe should have better towing laws, those trailer/car combinations for towing animals no less then 500kg are just plain ridiculous and asking for accidents to happen.......

Have also just read through above again and relised that it isnt fact that someone had died but an assumption - Sorry for the incorrect info :o

Hang on - do we know it was an issue with the trailer that caused the accident? I don't remember seeing anything that said that?

Ok, it says...in short.
the video was filmed by a witness who actually works for a tv company. The driver of the trailer was in no way to blame. He was driving down a 'federal' highway-might be similar to our dual carriage way?-when the other driver pulled out in front of him causing him to jack knife.

Thanks for that - I didn't think it was overladen trailer - I have a Jeep and these are proper towing vehicles. Neither could I find anything that said it was the fault of the trailer driver!

I was out recently with my friend who has an equi trailer (and Landrover to pull it) and we actually had someone undertake us (we were on the inside lane) on the hard shoulder to get past us - oh and they were in something like a corsa and could have easily done it properly. They were very very nearly squashed but I saw them before my friend did and warned her.

I do :p
The second comment down said that the car and trailer were travelling along the main road when a car pulled out of the crossroads into their path, so nothing to do with the weight/ size of the horse or trailer, although someone from America seems to disagree.

sorry but there was nothing wrong with the jeep towing one horse or two it is a suitable combination, if it had been a f350 dualy towing a two horse trailer and someone had pulled out in front of it would it have had a different ending ???maybe maybe not !!! accidents do happen... glad the horse had such good care and a happy ending

My heart was in my mouth watching that.

Jeeps are more than suitable for towing weight and power wise.

I'm sure lots of us who drive our four legged friends around have all had near misses because of impatient drivers who cut in and pull out in front of you because they don't want to be 'stuck' behind a horsebox or a trailer.
