keep happening at the yard, last night was especially bad, a horse got its leg caught in the field gate, somehow was on its back, the quick thinking of everyone involved saved him breaking his leg, they pinned his head down till the fire brigade got there and cut him out, he's at the hospital now, can everyone send good luck vibes to him and his owner
thanks guys

it was a metal 5 bar gate

i am going to put mesh on my gate i think, thats a good idea, was only saturday that one of the other horses got its headcoller caught in the hinge of the stable door and panicked, i had to cut its headcoller off

Hope the poor horse is OK, sending get well vibes and hugs.

I too had a nasty experience with a metal 5 bar gate 2 years ago. Was on my horse and closing a gate to ride back to the stables luckily this was on the yard where I keep my horse. I went to pull the gate towards me and my horse managed to put her front leg through the gate and obviously panicked, I came off and was knocked unconcious and she ripped the front of her leg open, also ripped the gate off one of its hinges. Luckily I was only out for 1/2 minute or so and woke up and rang for help (always carry your mobile with you, never know when you will need to ring for help) Was a miracle that she didn't damage the joint and after 6 weeks box rest and a lot of stitches/vet wrap later she was back in light work. I shudder to think what a mess her leg would have been in if she hadn't had brushing boots and overreach boots on. Her leg was only damaged in between overreach and brushing boot. She has been left with a bit of a scar but I really don't care about that, main thing is she fully recovered and we were back show jumping several months later.

Horrible things gates. I always get off to close them now, it's too risky attempting to close them while mounted unless they are cover with netting or something to stop horses getting caught up in them.

millions of good vibes to the horse and hugs to the owner....

My gelding got caught in a gate last year - he tore off half his leg and also managed to pull the big heavy metal gate off its hinges. Thankfully he didnt do any lasting damage, reading this makes me realise how much worse it could have been....

i had a pony who did get stuck in a 5 bar metal gate and did break his leg. had to be pts. but now especially with an accident prone tb mare i have wooden post and rail gate

i never realised how dangerous they could be, it really makes you think, i rap my boy up in cotton wool as it is!
thanks for all your good vibes, i hope they work! i will get some news on him tonight and update you all.

Years ago we found a small pony, who should have known better, had tried to jump a gate. She'd got over, but somehow got a back leg through the gate, then back, then the hoof back through. Sort of woven, and absolutely immoveable. She was just standing quietly, waiting to be rescued, bless her. We cut a bar of the gate out and freed her. Her leg had 'gone to sleep' - a quick massage and she was right as rain. Most not nearly as lucky.
