My old boy is having trouble with his back hoof cracking. It happened a couple of shoeing cycles ago - he had had some veterinary treatment which meant he went a week over his six weekly shoeing cycle as I didn’t want him being pulled around by the farrier straight after and when shoe was removed a big piece broke away on the outside.

My Farrier has since emigrated to Australia and I have a new Farrier who thinks his hoof is breaking there due to his hock arthritis and how he is wearing it but I am unsure if this is the case. Anyway, we are three weeks into the showing cycle and his clenches are up on that side.

My personal opinion is that his hooves are week due to it being so wet as the last time this happened was about ten years ago when we had a very wet summer and he was struggling to keep shoes on then due to the hooves being soft.

Has anybody else noticed this and is there anything I can do about it, other than keeping him in and feet dry which I really don’t want to do because he’s better off going out to prevent stiffness.
