Hello- my horse is a bit quiet, fine in the field but lacking his usual oomph when riding- he does everything he is asked but he's just not his normal self. My plan is to give him a week off work, double dose garlic and keep him warm (I'll be rugging him)- any other suggestions?

I am not sure what help you think overdosing on garlic will do. When my old horse was unusually quiet I had a blood sample taken and she had a virus.

my mare was exactly the same this summer i had her back checked had a blood test done every thing was normal and i no the quality of grass wasnt very good this year so i fed her extra feed to boost her energy levals and that seemed to help

Thanks for your comment that's most helpful, I think that the grass quality is changing and it might be a good plan to up it a bit as neither of my horses are fat. Tracey01, thanks for your comments too although I have previously been told on good authority that upping garlic can help the immune system. I would consider blood testing, as I have previously tested my event horse, but when she has had a virus in the past, no medication has been prescribed and I have been told to rest her for a week. As he is 110% in the field, galloping arounf and bossing the other horse around, I am planning to give him a week off and then reassess.

I think they go a bit quiet this time of year, shorter days, poorer grass and colder. Does your horse live out at night? May need stabling to rest and have a nice wedge of hay, feed may need upping now. One of mine was a bit lack lustre. Now altered his feed to Alpha A Lite, soya oil and Staypower Nuts. He is also in at night and his energy levels are higher now. Failing that, have a chat to your vet and see what their opinion is.

Actually, he lives out 24/7- always has. I do think that the grass quality has dropped, etc. I will up his feed and wrap him in cotton wool for a bit with extra grub and rugs. Thanks

my pony has picked up a virus , apparently there are quite a few around, might be the problem with your horse

Merlin has been flat as a pancake for a week now - looks well, eating well, no cough, not pale in the gums, smells 'right' but just not himself. I had bloods done a few years ago when he was lacklustre like this, and as you say, all it tells you is what you know ie they're not quite right and there is nothing to prescribe if it's a virus.

He lives out, too but our grass is good, so I'll rug him at night, start him on Propell Plus with his breakfast and have a quiet sit on him every few days. He'll soon let me know when he's feeling better.

Hope your boy feels better soon too, Marilyn!

Might be slightly anemic get some PINK POWDER!!! Has every vitamin and iron in and rest her for a week. I'm not a fan of garlic as it is a member of the onion family and onions are poisonous to horses I just don't see how that can be right!

Most of the mares in our little herd are like this at the moment too - just lacking energy. One was blood tested recently but nothing found. I think they have all had a bit of a virus and are just getting over it - I have upped my feed a bit and started putting a LW on at night but if the weather carries on being this grim will start bringing mine in soon and hopefully get some sparkle back!

Thanks guys- really helpful comment everyone. Also, didn't realise the garlic/gastric ulcer link. In all honesty. I was feeding 30ml- so not much, but it's back down to 15ml again now.
The horse who isn't 100% is on ProBio, salt and garlic- would something like propell plus or pink powder overload him on certain vits and mins?
Thanks all- really appreciate feedback- love HHO!

Pink Powder is usually my first choice for a horse that needs perking up, I simply replace the usual daily vits and mins. If there is no change after a few days I would then consider a blood test taking into account all other usual checks

Thanks for that- he seems very bright in himself after a couple of days off and was squealing and leaping yesterday in the field but I have heard good things about Pink Powder- I'll look into that.

My mare was exactly the same - just a bit lethargic but otherwise looking really healthy. Got her blood tested last week and it showed she had a virus and mild anaemia (as a result of the virus). Rested her for a week and given visorbin. She was re-tested yesterday and whilst anaemia gone she still has a virus so now on another week's rest before being re-tested again. If i hadn't had her re-tested I woudl probably have started riding her which would have meant she didn't have time to recover properly. Personally I would perhaps give yours a week off and then if she is still feeling lethargic have her tested.
