My TB is once again in hospital. It's wearing me down. Since I have owned him he has fractured his face. Fractured his shoulder. Dislocated eye socket. Badly injured leg from kick. Nearly died of colic from twisted gut. Now in clinic after putting nail through the sole of hoof with suspect ed pedal bone fracture.
 
Christ that would be enough to wear anyone down. :(

I hope he recovers and stops injuring himself as that does seem to be quite a catalog of serious injuries.
 
Oh gosh, that is a bad run of injuries/illnesses, I'm not surprised that you are finding all of that wearing. I hope he is OK.

What a shame! That's awful....

Is there a common theme with his injuries? Are they being incurred during turnout? Not in any way implying that it's your fault, just wonder whether a change In his management might prevent further injuries. ie. strip grazing away from the main herd. Is he very low down the pecking order or is he very 'playful' with his field mates?

Leg injury was from another horse break ing into his field and kicking his leg. Fracture face and body injury including eye was when we had his teeth rasped and reared up and over into concrete yard. Only had him 6 weeks if that. Colic, have no idea. That was really bad. Had to say good bye to him twice but he made it. Monday he was lame in field with slightly twisted shoe. Nail missing. Yep, gone through sole nr frog. Immediate transfer to vets.

We've got an ex-racer. NEVER again, it's the most stupid, accident prone horse i've ever known, i'm going to stick to natives & ISH.

Tb = padded cell, lol. I will never own another one, self harmers or clearly look for trouble. I feel your pain.

I agree. Never again. And yet he is the kindest sweetest horse who has been through so much pain. Spoke to vet. Fetlock tap came back clear. Pedal bone has had a direct hit but no fracture. Hole has been cut in sole and flushed. On strong pain relief. But very lame still.
 
It will take time to heal. If it goes past what would be considered normal healing time, then mention to vets metrinizadole tablets, they are for bacterial infections which will usually occur in the foot from an injury, i do know our vets have had success with them from hoof punctures from nails.

My cob sustained a small nick on the inside of front leg in the fleshy bit so quite deep from shitland who kicked him, cold hosed it for 2mins so it was clean, put some flamazine on, next day a scab had formed, the next day it was dry, the next day it was going. If it had been a tb it would been box rest, antibiotics, cold hosing, bandaging, insurance claiming, lol

4 weeks padded up with hoof boot
Then 8 weeks with rubber special soles. Was given all clear last week. Then during ride he had choke and had vet out. Massive ulcers in mouth with sharp hooks at back and steep ramps. One ulcer size egg. So today was 1.5 hrs of dental work under heavy sedation and no riding for 10 days. Teeth were only done 5 months ago. Boohoo. It's on going. Forgot to say that included in his long list of accidents etc that he got blood poisoning in his front leg. It swelled up like a balloon. That was last winter.
 
I really feel your pain because I also have a horse who managed to injure himself even if we wrapped him in bubble wrap.

From the age of about 4 up until the age of 10 he had regular injuries.

He doesn't seem to injure himself much now but he suffers from COPD, potential seizures and sunburn on the only white bit he has on his body (fetlock).

3 of his black legs have huge white scars all over them from old injuries he managed to do (god knows how) we have taken the most care ever going over the field/fences/stables looking for any potential threat... I think he could hurt himself on thin air !

We have however had horses that are the most hardest things ever, never had a runny nose or scratch.

Strange isn't it ?
 
Poor you and your boy. Over the years I've developed a philosophy the more you care for them the more injuries, sickness they get. Mine are now out 24/7, 365 days of the year.

Hope he recovers soon and keeps out of mischief.
