Horse appears sore after having teeth rasped

My horse had his teeth rasped on wed, he was sedated and had a lot done as his teeth had been sharp. That night he did not finish his hay, and thurs night he was eating his hay in a very slow, tentative, way(usually eats with enthusiasm and vigour).
I gave him a bute yesterday, and although eating slowly, he was better, and odviously I did not attempt to ride him.

Odviously if he continues to not eat normally I will get hm checked out , but if it continues to get bettter how long should I leave off riding him. He is ridden in Dr Cooks, which can tighted round his face?

Our dentist has warned us in the past that it can take a horse that has had a lot of problems a few days to learn to eat properly. It takes them some time to get used to the new jaw movements that were restricted before.
He said we would particularly notice it when they were eating their hay.

Was he done with an electric rasp? They can get burnt tongues and even burnt teeth if the operator allows the rasp to get too hot. You may need to have this checked out, as my understanding is that a burnt tooth can die, giving problems for the rest of the horse's life.

I hope it is just that he is getting used to his new teeth.

It's worth getting a good physio to look if it continues as the gag can leave the muscles of the jaw sore .
If the vet did the work I would probally give them a ring if you are still worried.

When I chatted to my vet last time my 2 were rasped he said there are teeth which have nerve endings that should never be rasped but he has known some edt's try to rasp them which would expose the nerve. A sign is if horse isn't drinking or is shooting back in pain when he does. Hopefully yours is just sore rather than suffering from nerve pain but I would call vet out if doesn't improve in few days as last thing u want is horse dropping lots of weight before winter.

Thank you for your replies. He was rasped manually. Last night he had eaten all his hay and semed brighter this morning, so hopefully alll is ok. The dentist returned my call this morning and said that he was just geting used to a different feel why he ate as his teeth were realined, but I will keep an eye and did not ride him again today.
