"Horse put down after blade attack
A horse had to be put down after being attacked with what police described as a "bladed instrument".
The 19-year-old Piebald mare was found with cuts to its body in a field at a farm in Essington, Staffordshire.

Officers believe it happened between Friday evening and Saturday morning and are searching for three youths.

They said there was another incident in the area on Friday night involving a gang of youths cutting trees. Witnesses are urged to contact Police."

This report must have been scaled down for the general public. The mare had two legs practically hanging off, and was found by the owner, who had owned the mare for 18 years.
 
That is just too sickening for words. I hope they string the bastards who did this up by the balls... Or better still leave them alone with the owner for 5 minutes.

That poor poor mare, she must have suffered sooo much. Glad she is out of pain now, but what an absolute and utter tragedy.
 
Thats terrible, I dont know what the sick individuals get out of doing such things, lets hope they get caught, but the punishment they get, wont be what they deserve.

I live in Staffs, not heard from Essington, whereabouts is that.
 
It was reported on the local Staff news this evening, I picked it up from another horse forum, so I don't know the locality. It was somewhere close to a woods or covert where drunken youths hang out, hopefully word will spread in the immediate area and horse owners around there will spread the word to be alert and keep their horses safe.
 
i live in South Staffs but still not heard of Essington-im rather dense! i'll tell my friends to keep an eye out, their yard is surrounded by woods and public footpaths.

Aah just google mapped it and it's near Wednesfield, by Bloxwich golf club!

Thanks for letting us know where Essington is, thankfully for me its a good way off from me and my cobs.

Poor mare and owners, must of been terrible finding her.
 
I am so upset and disgusted by this that I would like to start a fund to put up a reward to catch whoever did this. I am willing to put £30, I don't expect anyone to put any where near this much but anyone willing to help please email me caroline@horseantics.co.uk. Even if its £1 or 50p anything will help. Someone somewhere knows who did this. They will of bragged to someone, people like that can't help themselves, we live in a sick society. Anyone?

A horse was today put down after a savage knife attack at a village farm near Wolverhampton.

The 19-year-old horse called Maggie, which belonged to local woman Davina Bowyer, was set upon with some sort of blade at Essington Hall Farm.

Mrs Bowyer, aged 47, was too distraught to speak today but her partner Mick Asbury, 57, described the injuries as “horrific”.He said: “There was a wound to her back leg, the achilles was severed, her front leg was totally smashed above the knee and there were cuts all over her.”

He said Maggie was a sweet natured horse who would not hurt a fly. Mr Asbury’s brother-in-law spotted the horse when he was out walking this morning. It is believed the attack happened between around 10.30pm last night and 7am today.

Mr Asbury, who lives in Essington, said a gang of youths had been heard near the site and beer bottles were found there this morning.

Will Simkin, whose grandparents own the farm, said: “The horse was found this morning with bad lacerations and was bleeding quite heavily. It had one of its legs broken and the vet had to put it down.”

Mr Simkin said there had been incidents of youths hanging around the farm, drinking late at night.

Parish councillor David Clifft warned other animal owners to be vigilant. He said: “I am distraught and bewildered as to why someone would do this. It is absolutely diabolical
 
God that's horrible - two of ours got slashed about 15 years ago when there was someone doing it in Hampshire.....luckily they got away with minor cuts.
 
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give to the Reward Appeal to catch the killers of this lovely horse. It doesn't bear thinking about that these scumbags could do this to another horse tonight...

I have already pledged money via IHDG, where the Appeal started all thanks to Horseantics.
 
This was the story and all I can say is those responsible are very sick and I would hope and pray that the same fate would befall them but sadly someone would be up for manslaughter or GBH if that were the case.
Let's just hope then that those who did it are caught and punished and to other horse owners near the area be very vigilant.

This is an absolutely an appalling incident. I very much hope that the perpetrators of this cruel act are found and swiftly brought to justice through the courts. I hope that a private prosecution is taken against those responsible for this terrible act which will result in them suffering financial hardship for many years to come.

Presumably if this is a rural community and the youths were clearly seen somebody must know who they are either from sight or thewir transport. I doubt that the Law will be able to dish up a fir punishment but hopefully the local community can make it plain that these obnoxious wastes of space are known and treated as such.
 
There was an item on midlands teletext last night stating that police were questioning two 18 year old youths in connection with this. Hope they charge them and they get a decent sentence not just a smacked wrist!
