Trouble is there are lots of things that could happen to us every day, asuming we don't just die in our beds, but unless we want to live on antidepressants sometimes its best just to laugh about it.
A fence panel blew over when I was out riding this morning, shall we ban fences?
What being bitten by a dog?! Its happened on numerous occassions, still I have no inclination to punish all dog owners for the wrongs of a few! I think thats down to being a normal, level headed, fair human being.
Thanks for the sarcastic trash comment though, its thrilling to find that I'm having an effect on you!
I didn't read Perce's response to you as sarcastic in any way. And I agree with much of the sentiment of their post.
I've never, ever had a problem with dogs - off the lead or on. Many of the problems we encounter as riders are either avoidable or dealable. However, I accept that there is an exception to every rule.
So contrary to what you may read in the papers. You're more likely to have a problem with a 'killer leaf' than an attacking mutt
What I was trying to say is that some dog owners feel that their dogs have a right to roam free, regardless of laws/rules and how it affects other people and animals.

My horse would like you to ban wheelie bins please. Only the black ones though, the green ones are friendly.

Ah, now that is a good point. My saint of a horse is very genuinly worried by the old wheelie bins....... But we'll have to ban both green and black - he's not discrimatory in any way
My dogs go on their leads by default, when around horses whilst out hacking. This is not because they are nasty, but they are used to my seasoned hunter, who doesn't bat an eyelid to them and you cannot be sure every horse is that well accustomed, so on the lead they go.
While walking my dogs at the local beach I saw a lady coming towards me on what looked like a pointer, going sideways
so on went my dogs leads. The guy behind me with a GSD was too busy on the phone to notice so his dog went bombing up to the horse who starts freaking out. I then shouted "Get out of it dog" which is when the man noticed, called his dog off and put it on the lead.
Should all dogs be punished for this - no, surely not. Otherwise we'll all be punished for the horses who kcik and bite and the people who drink drive. Its not fair.
mal
some things, the really big important things, should only be debated by grown up rational people.
If you are so frightened of dogs that you are intimidated by one just jumping up at you, then I would submit that your perspective is so slanted that you cannot offer anything useful to this subject.
He is not a racist! He is just doing his bit for the environment!
He *is* grey, I can't deny it, but he's obviously not a white supremecist because a) he spends a lot of his life covering himself in green and brown stuff and b) he's not hogged and does not wear big boots. Or even shoes on his hind feet.
He's gone into a Danii Minoque decline now, at the mere thought you could think such a thing about him
Not all dog owners are as responsable as you. For instance, a friend of ours had some sheep attacked by a dog, the dog's owners knew it was a sheep worrier, it had done it before, yet they still let it off the lead on a common the borders our friend's property. The dog ran away from the owners, jumped over the wall and attacked several ewes. Our friend, being soft, did not isist the dog was PTS, but had the dog owners pay the vets bill.
Marmalade I have to say, I don't think a dog that worries sheep needs to be PTS. Muzzled when walked, perhaps, taken off its stupid owner, almost definitely but not PTS.
However should the dog have been shot by the farmer it would have been warranted.
I am responsible, I love my horse and I love dogs, I am a big believer in teaching dog and horse owners MUTUAL respect, which I think is far more useful than the horse community fighting with the dog community.
Not read all the replies so excuse if I repeat something.
I don't mind if peoples dogs run towards my horse, I don't mean yapping and aggressive but just running around being a dog and having fun. If I can't control my horse then thats my problem isn't it, sometimes unexpected things happen and you just have to deal with it.
I know sometimes I cannot call my dog back - once he is on the trail of something, damm terriers! - but he would not go or run at a horse, well not one he didn't know so I don't think it s crime if my dog walks by himself past a horse. If someone's horse is that uncontrollable near a sensible dog off the lead, then mayeb they should question whether they should be riding it.
If a dog attacked my horse, I think most of ours would most likely attack back, knowing how they like to terrorise our own dogs form time to time
But if a dog did attack my horse, I would beat the living daylights out of it with whatever I had, whip, my foot, rock whatever I wouldn't care.
Should people be made to keep their dogs on leads? Of course not, thats just silly. Some horse riders seem to think the countryside is for them alone, and woe betide anyone else who tries to enjoy it.
I agree Stencilface, but everyone is so *precious*
A woman in our village was 'attacked' by a notorious (and lovable rogue) JRT who bit her bum (which was actually an act of public service in a lot of people's eyes!)
She made such a fuss and threatened to sue and goodness knows what, they owner just said 'why didn't you give him a kick?' and she went off at him about being cruel and irresponsible an lord knows what .. the dog was just an ole farm dog who was up to no good, and a well aimed toe and a cussing would have prevented the whole thing.
If a dog attacked my shetland, they'd be picking up bits of dog from all over the county, I can tell you. He's not over given to dogs, he does mind his manners if they mind theirs, but if they step out of line, far as he's concerned, they're fair game!
Well lets face it horses and dogs are able to scrap it out without our help. When Ed gets annoyed with my JRTs he stomps his front feet - you should see them scatter - like rats!!
My horse doesnt like QUAD bikes, hes not too keen on dogs eutherThe dog that got into the field and nipped my horse back legs got a kick in the head from my horse..the dog is so stuoid he would do it again if he had the chance. But I keep him away from the gate.when the owner lets him out.
sorry mal!
I seem to have stirred up a can of worms (if they are not banned also!)
Thanks SallySmith for reading my post as intended (I think/hope)
mal - I have had some problems with dogs and do understand your concerns but I feel very strongly that all should not be punished for the sake of a few and i'm afraid us dog owners do come in for a lot of this. i would hope any dog owner would check rider ok and help if poss, before removing said dog from scared horse asap. But unfortunately the type of dog owners you are referring to may be keen to disappear as quickly as they can.
marmalead76 - i hope you didn't seriously believe that i wanted to ban children!! I have an adorable one of my own!
I'm more worried about black Shitlands as my boy is terrified of them. You never know, you may be lucky enough to buy a horse with a deadly aim. Like our friend's horse who sent a terrier flying, quite literally, for having the stupidity and lack of good manners to try and nip its heels. I very much doubt it will try that again. My daughter's pony is equally intolerant of naughty canines and I would flay any dog alive if it tried to get any of my horses.
