Just considering some options I have available. One of them would involve my experienced horse spending approximately one week in 3 at a different yard (with better facilities, on site training and to keep him in work around my work, he’d be coming with me). He’s 17yo, extensively competed all his career staying away very regularly (monthly approx) and settles immediately.

Has anyone done similar? Mad idea to share my split life with a horse?

I havent, but a friend did for a while with her iberian stallion and that was Devon to Bucks and back. She also took her pygmy goats 😂 With yoursI think you would have no issues at all.

Mine are commonly now spending most of their time here (2 horses at home in a very quiet environment), and a week or two, or three, elsewhere every 6 weeks. They seem really secure with it. Plus, when we went to camp, he just adapted to that too.

Two different scenarios that have worked for me in the past with no problem....

Sons' pony, especially when between sons who are 6 years apart, spent Friday - Sunday/Monday at a local riding school, and the rest of the week at home. I often brought back one of their elderly ponies for a bit of grass over the weekend as their grazing was limited.

I have often put my mare, and previous mare, on holiday/schooling livery at my regular trainer's yard, plus sometimes a few weeks in January as they have an indoor.

None of the above horses/ponies have/had any issues settling and fitting into their different routines. I'd say go for it. You are away enough in other places, so you know how he reacts to being somewhere different.

With one like yours that is away a lot I think I would give it a shot.

One of the most neurotic mares I ever met had an owner who was going to college and decided to take her backwards and forwards college / parents house. She not only dealt with it but actually her behaviour at the parents house improved massively. Most of us were expecting a massive fail so very surprised to see her suddenly grow up.
