I have had my horse about 6 months. He started of in a field next to two other horses. We then moved them in together. Hes now getting a bit bargy and rude when he is sepated from them. Bringing them in from the field hes started pulling me even if they are still in sight but off in front of him. We tried to load him into a trailer at the weekend and he was just pulling off towards the field. Tried getting a bit tough with a flick from a whip but that just made him pull me further. Tried circling him tonight but just he just pulled again when pointing in the direction of the others. The others dont get ridden and he is happy enough when out. Tries to turn but never does anything else. I don't want to end up with a rude horse but so much of his routine involves the others. Any advice would be gratefully received!

If he is allowed to he will become even more rude, trying to load him when you are not totally in control is bound to fail, using a whip will not help if he is pulling away from you.

Get a halter, a rope one or a specially designed control halter, you need to get his attention and it starts by having control of his head, then do some groundwork to get him thinking about what you want, move him around when you ask not when he feels like it, you may be best getting someone in to get you started but it is not insurmountable if you are firm, fair and consistent, once he learns it is easier to be with you on your terms you will both be happier.

Thank you. Is there a particular control halter you would recommend? I have looked at the be nice ones, they have mixed reviews and sound like they can be quite harsh. I will look at finding someone to give me some ground work lessons so we can work on it from there
