Horse bedding?!

At the moment i am using straw as bedding in my horses stable. However, the yard we are at has very dusty straw, its ok for the occasional wet days my horse is in. But im slightly concerned about when winter comes and she will be in full time, that the dust will make he cough.

I would like to try shavings, is this a good idea and what is the average cost?

Someone else at the yard makes a bedding for her horse out of cardboard chips, has anyone else heard of this? and what do you think?

I have heard of Bedmax, and how good it is. So i may give it a whirl!

Yes, the cardboard chips are bought from a recycling plant. It looks very uncomfortable and flat for the horses, so i wouldnt want to use it inless it has a purpose. They are cut into small pieces, about the same size as wood chips.
Very odd.But cheap, im sure.

zero dust, very absorbent and very economical as well

I find my mucking out takes a lot less time, you don't throw nearly as much away and its cheaper than nearly all shavings.

makes great compost afterwards as well
 
mmmmm sounds intersting that carboard chip!! Wouldn't it hurt if it sticks into the horse??

Personally i think it is very good as they are large flake shavings and if you have a wet horse like my boy they really soak the wee up and you don't have to use loads of bale of shavings.

I would definately give it a go, and normally with other shavings when i put the bale down i would have to leave the stable to let dust settle down but i have never had a dusty bale of Bedmax shavings :D xx
 
I use Bedmax and like it better than brands like Hunter shavings. That is because it absorbs the pee well but doesn't let it spread very far through the bedding whereas other shavings in my experience can get large areas of wet.
 
I used to use cardboard chip very good stuff for a mucky horse highly absorbent and sticks together when wet, it also doesnt stick to rugs ect.

However are supplier stopped selling it so I am currently using a finely chopped straw and I love it £5 a bale, very slightly dusty but nothing in comparsion to shavings, very easy to muck out :)
 
Bedmax, seems like an all round favourite. It dosent look greatly expensive either.

May i ask how much 'comfybed' costs? as the website does not show prices.

The cardboard chips look very difficult to muck out, but i wouldnt mind giving them a try! With the finely cut straw, would a horse find it edible? as i dont think i could afford £5 a bale of beddings, to turn into food!! :)
 
because i have my horse on a large yard, I am able to get our comfybed delivered at £3.25 per bale for a massive bag of it. Admittedly we have to pay delivery on top of that which since we aren't a million miles away works out to an extra 35p per bale.

Its really good stuff as well

ps, we do take 700 bales at a time tbf..... I think if you just order one pallet at a time its £4.50 per bale delivered or summat???

I found the cardboard realitively easy to muck out and I know serveral girls enjoyed deep bedding on it.

The chopped straw is treated with a cribox type product that makes it taste horrid so they try it once and never again :)
 
I think i shall test bales before winter officially sets in. I have read up on bedmax and it seems to be very well reccomended, as does comfybed. So i will give them a blast!! :)

That sounds more appealing, now i know my greedy pony wont gobble the whole lot up!! :) I think i may also give it a go, do you know what the official name of the chopped straw is? so i can get it direct from the company? :)

I dont think i will be ordering 700 bales at once!! But a pallet would be more like it! i shall order a few bales from the local feed and bedding company to trial! :)
 
Unfortunatly I cant actully remember the name as I buy it from my YO not a direct supplier, I will ask her this evening where she gets it from.
