Horse being bothered by flies

My grey mare is really being bothered by flies or midges on her face. Her face looks quite sore. I did put a fly mask on but that makes her itchy so not really helping.

One of other liveries went to field yesterday and thought she had a mud splatter on her face but it was flies. Her face and head is quite raw in places bless her.

Think I will ring vet tomorrow but just wondered if anyone else was having same problem or, had any idea how to help her.
 
I use Lincoln green gel on any bare patches on my boys (one of them has had to have a Boett-style rug on today, despite not having sweet itch, just to keep the blasted bugs off him!) It's really good stuff and goes on quite thinly in this heat. I can't keep mine in so they are covered head to (almost) toe with either fly sheet or green gel!
 
The Boett hoods are really good. Be careful if you put fly gel on her face. If she rubs her head on her leg she can rub it in her eyes which will sting and make her rub more and make it worse

Yep ours are all the same. Too hot in the stables so they're out with fly masks and fly rugs if they need them. I guess a nose net on mask might help. Fly gel rubbed all over the face also maybe?

She's in a fly rug but her face is sore in places so got to be careful what I put on in terms of fly spray/gel. Smothered her in E45 cream last night just to try and soothe her face.
 
Have you considered buying a fly repellent cream? You can order some Radiol cream from ****** at £5.79. Its good stuff. You can spread it all over her face.

Hi, I have the same problem with my horse and he rubs his face on his legs or hay manger or whatever is to hand after he has been ridden making his eyes sore which in turn make them itchy and then more rubbing making them sore again - its a vicious circle. He always get turned out with a fly mask, and has a fringe on when hacking. I use eye and nose lotion which has helped considerably and fly spray before putting on his fly rug. You can buy fly spray impregnated towels (like wet wipes) from the pound shop which you can wipe on her face, this proved quite effective with my horse, although he still gets fly eye from time to time despite all my efforts.
