My boy is being vetted this week in view of going to a wonderful home. He's having a vetting with Xrays, which I've never experienced before, but hear so many horror stories of vets being terrified of any come backs, they will fail an animal on X Y and Z. He's a young, sound, clean limbed comp horse and never had the vet before apart from vaccinations, so *should* be good to go!! I'm just so nervous though, this is the perfect home for him potentially.

Any words of advice or reassurance? What a nerve racking time hey! Huge fingers crossed for us please!!! X

Hi ,it's nice in a way to see an owner nervous too cuz I'm a buyer and I had a horse vetted last week and it failed and I was gutted so i guess the owner may of been too, I'm getting a re-vet done cuz it was something silly and I like the horse so on a positive note if they like your horse and it fails on something silly they'll probs have a re-vet :)

I sometimes wonder the motive behind all this vetting of horses. Why do people do it. Are they frightened of being ripped off by a dodgy owner, worried that something will be masked by drugs, don't really know what they are looking at and just need a vet to confirm that there is nothing wrong.

I tend to think it's people not being too sure about what they are looking at, then again some vets aren't too sure either.

This X-ray lark is quite a new one on me, a little peek beneath the skin. What exactly are they going to X-ray, just the feet or all the legs. I suspect there will be a lot more failures following this development. What about having blood tests done as well?

What about a compulsary warranty, or an extended warranty!

A lifetime guarantee.

Basically I supose, if you don't know enough to trust your own judgement, you will be ripped off, if not by a dodgy seller, then a vet.

This re-vetting sounds a good idea, keep getting it vetted till it passes.

lol.

As a breeder - and therefore a seller - I always encourage buyers to have a vetting even though I am as sure as I can be that the horse is 100%. But there ARE things that I may not be aware of - for example - a heart murmur. Had one of those turn up in a 2 year old filly I had vetted as part of her grading - it only showed on vigorous exercise. In the end, it turned out to be insignificant (something my vet termed "a 2 year old squeak") but we had the heart u/s to be sure.

I've never had one fail a vetting (yet!) but am always happy to know that my opinion is verified by an independent vet and that the buyer is getting a sound and healthy horse.

I haven't had a buyer request x-rays yet - although we DO have to have colts vetted for stallion grading - things DO turn up that you don't know about. One colt had a small chip - with remodelling - in a front fetlock. Two lots of vets agreed it was the result of a minor injury - not OCD - and therefore insignificant for a breeding stallion (and unlikely to cause any problems in the future.)

When I was younger I seem to remember most dressage horses in my area (not in the UK) being X-rayed for vetting ... this was at a time when X-rays weren't even that common after an injury ... They focussed on the lower leg joints, I guess to make sure a horse is not coming with conformation issues or bone fragments that are a lameness waiting to happen? My friend's horse couldn't be sold because he had some bony changes in the hocks ... Fair enough, though luckily for her he sold to an amateur home and remained sound for the next 19 years ...

I agree with janetgeorge when I sell a horse I do try to get the buyers to have it vetted as the vetting covers the owner as much as the buyer. :)

Oh dear, I feel sick with worry!! I'm sort of of the opinion that if you look hard enough, you will find something. Scary to think if everyone had their healthy horses x-rayed, what would we potentially find! Fingers crossed a bazillion times! Fair play to the lady, she is spending a lot of moeny and it's a home for life, perfect for him.
