My new 4 year old does not have a date of birth on his passport, just year of birth (2008).

So will he be a 5 year old on New Year's Day?

I've heard somewhere its just race horses.

He is the only horse I have owned that I don't know his actual date of birth.

My mare is birthday-less too, I've chosen to give her her birthday on the date I bought her :o Just out of curiosity - how does this work in shows/competitions? Do you go by the Jan/May rule and use their year of birth?

The traditional birthdays for racehorses/Thoroughbreds is indeed the 1st of January. For all other breeds it is the 1st of May. I always class my boy's birthday on the date I got him on though. :)

Starreyed, for competitions you take their age from year of birth not date. Technically if a foal was born tomorrow it would be a yearling on New Years day even though it was just a day old.
