My 6 yr old ish has started biting at her sides just behind where the girth goes. She also is very uncomfortable when I'm trying to groom her around this area. Ears go back and she tries to kick. Strangely though this is much worse in the evenings when she can be downright aggressive if I try to groom her. She has been turned out naked for the last week also she is just coming out of her first season of the year. I wondered if she has done sort of allergy or could this be sweet itch. Sorry if I sound like a numpty but she is my first horse so have loads of silly questions.:)

Tally ho I think she is just finishing her first season. She has been a complete cow for the last week aggressive/ bucking/ flirting etc. Could she still be in season this been going on since late last week.

I know, you said. Some mares can still be very sensitive, and indeed, never stop being sensitive on their flanks, girth area and near the teats and even the pelvis/hips. My current mare is like this... she bites!

There are plenty of herbs and supplements on the market, its finding what suits. If you go down that route, prepare for an expensive journey.

Diet. The usual high fibre low starch rule applies, even for skin conditions. You can tell lice a mile off, they lay eggs that are unmistakable! Like human nits... yuk.

Try oils high in Omega 3 and 6 like linseed or veg oil?

Yep, ulcers are a definite possibility, this is also associated with dehydration in some cases too hence dry skin...
