Hi I new on here so please bare with me.
My horse have bitten about 1.5in of the end of his tongue. Has anyone elses horse done this? If so how did it cope and have you had any promblems.

I had a mare that bit a huge chunk off the end of her tongue - she had fallen over and obviously bitten into it - it was hanging out the side of her mouth and the vet had to come and sedate her and chop it off. She was perfectly fine with out it - didn't notice any difference in her. (BTW - I fainted after watching the vet do his procedure - poor vet didn't know what to do)

I know a horse which has half a tongue. It happened because he was trying to fight with another horse through the stable bars and the other horse grabbed it and bit it off! :(

It wasn't very nice and he must have been in a lot of pain, but the vet came to see him and there wasn't much they could do so they said to just leave it to heal. Obviously your horse might struggle eating for a while, so keep an eye on how much he manages to eat and watch he doesn't start to lose weight.

The pony is fine again now and is still happily ridden. He only has half a tongue now but it has healed nicely.

[oh dont know what is worse having it bitten of or biting your own off. Im glad it healed ok and can be ridden fine, as it is worrying me. He is eating hay fine, making a mess with his hard feed, took him out for some grass this morning and ate it ok.
Its early days yet as only happened Friday, on a good note is has not bleed anymore

Thank you everyone one for get well messages, took him out twice for grass today eating quiet well, he is having more trouble with hard feed albeit that well soaked and soft. I have so much trouble injecting him if he is not gone thru enough he is like a pin cushion now, I think the injections bother me more than him.

Update on Lochie vet is really pleased with his progress, just have to make sure his tongue stays a nice pink colour, seems to eat hay/grass ok, makes a bit of a mess with water and hard feed.

Yes the bit he bite off was huge fits in the palm of your hand.

We think he was playing with one of the others and went to grap the underside of the neck rug and caught his own tongue.

Sometimes you care to much I have no barbed wire, rubbish, old cars etc in the field and he does it himself, he was going x country schooling on the Sunday perhaps he was trying to get out of it.

I feel so sorry for him, he is doing well, being pampared, eating ok, he is just very quiet in himself. He is such a good boy x x
