HORSE BOARDING WRECKED MY HORSE

Hi, I know Dan from doing a trick riding course with him a few years back, I had wanted to restart trick riding (before I slipped a disc, grr) and when i was there he mentioned about the boarding. I was interested in getting involved and it turned out he needed a rider, so I joined Team Ihorse and we were champions this season (nothing to do with me, all down to Dan and Rohan!). They run weekend sessions near Wolverhampton, perhaps make the trip up there and they can show you how to get started?

It definitely won't be for everyone, and if you want to race you need to work on your horses fitness program before hand as there were a few this year who perhaps didn't realise how tough it is. But I definitely enjoyed it. I'd like to be the boarder, but im useless!

Mmm, that's a bit far!! I know some of the equine colleges are picking it up so there is hope of instruction heading south.

I quite fancy some tent pegging and garrocha!

This thread had me so confused.

Horse Boarding means you keep your horse at a livery where I come from :D

I thought I was going to come on here and read that a livery yard had wrecked your horse. Never ever even heard of the other thing as a sport. Backyard fun maybe :D

Ah, the mandatory flogging of a new poster, how utterly expected.;)

Glad your lad is back to his old self. Wierd type of sport though, imo.

I am not the only fruit loop! I thought exactly the same thing if you see my post on the first page!!!!

Kat, thanks for the response.
As you know me personally and know what issues we have had, you also know my post isn't to slander horse boarding, but to make aware that it is not suitable for everyone.

Also, created a new profile on here as a married lady!

I noticed the 'Mrs'! I think perhaps the capitals in the title made it come across as an angry post (that's normally what I think anyway!) so perhaps the tone was read differently. You were braver than me to try Frank in the first place, I certainly couldn't have held onto him! I enjoyed racing against you guys but i definitely understand and respect why you decided to call it quits with him.

Not sure if you saw this but you and I are on the Discovery Channel at about 2mins in!

Bit of poetic licence in there as it was only round 2 not the championship, and we magically switch lanes after the last race, but a nice piece.

I see your point about capitals.
Have seen the link, looks awesome.
Really enjoyed the season and gutted that frank can't continue, but it is in his best interest.
Everything was confirmed in that main arena at Malvern with you. We had just won and knew that he couldn't do it anymore.
So pleased to have met a great bunch of people and hope our paths cross again soon.

Totally irrelevant but don't you just hate when you tell your story and situation and too highly opinionated people rip you to bits!! Well done for trying something new that half the folk on here wouldn't dare!

GS, there is a rope that fits around the saddle and comes out through the back of the gullet I think, if you watch the daily planet vid that KatPT posted it shows it on there :)

Hi, yes, it is from the saddle system with a breastplate attached and a quick release so that you can release as fast as you need to. I imagine the system will progress as the sport progresses. The horses don't seem to notice the force on the rope at all, although the smaller horses with heavier board rides obviously notice it more at the start.

I'm not racing either next year sadly, as I want to concentrate on getting my young horse out and about (plus i can say i retired as champion!) but I will definitely go along and cheer at any of the comps I can get to.

The negative comments make me smile. I have not said a bad word about horse boarding, actually the opposite.
Everything I have put is correct and in my opinion. Thanks Gill88 for your comment, you read it the way it was intended.

Very interesting. when I first saw your post I thought you were on about horse boarding as in 'Boarding School - take your horse with you' type of boarding!! :)

I've seen Horse Boading in one of the horsey publications a few months ago, looked brilliant, think he may have been your horse that was featured, sure it was a m/w WB type. Maybe it was the horse boarders attitude that worried your horse. The 'determination at all costs' attitude would have got through to Frank and maybe he found the pressure too much. Maybe he was worried about the person falling off the board and the board running into his back legs, what happens in this instance exactly, when someone falls off?

Have to say the bloke on the video without a helmet on boarding is imho a complete freakin idiot. How stupid not to have safety wear on, does he think he can't suffer brain damage falling off a skateboard. Having said that years ago when I used have the odd go on a skateboard as a kid none of us had helmets, but then we weren't being dragged at 25mph either!

I'd love to try it, but I'd just be shot off into the sunset me thinks :)

It is great fun if you have a level headed horse that doesn't fizz up. Frank hunts, fun rides, hunter trials etc and nothing gets him too excited, but this blew his mind.
My boarder is amazing and although wants to win (like me), he never said a word when we raced, he had tactics to win (swinging in and roping in). It got to the point that when my boarder said 'ready' Frank would bolt, so we had to use thumbs up instead.
The last competition frank cut his mouth from how much he was pulling on the bit which is when we quit completely.
I would tell anyone to give it a go, but just be aware it is not suitable for all horses.

As the sport has progressed, rules have come into play and safety is top priority, so helmets must be worn at all times.
Frank is scared of the board or rider and at the end of a race unlike the other boarders who crash, mine actually stopped by jumping on his board and turning it, so no crashes by frank feet.
Unfortunately for frank the training centre has a hedge as a stopping point, which for many horses is great, but Frank is a hunter and on more than one occasion has gone to jump the hedge..there is a road on the other side lol.

I think some clips from that video are pretty old. The rules now state that anyone either riding a horse or a board when associated with the club must wear a helmet and body armour for the boarders. So they are certainly trying to tackle that issue! (You're right, I think they are mental even with armour!)

If someone falls (which they have to), the horse rider immediately releases the rope so that the horse carries on moving away from the board and rope. It is the board riders job to make sure that the board does not fly off away from them as they board. This is why everyone competing has started slow and they make sure that they are all competant at falling safely before they are allowed to go faster (hence why I was never allowed to go fast!, I would faceplant every time)

HORSE BOARDING WRECKED MY HORSE

My horse is 'wrecked'; he will never be ridden again. Yours is fit and healthy and able to enjoy a number of disciplines..

Horse boarding did not 'wreck' your horse; it just didn't suit him.

Good luck with Frank, he looks a lovely boy :)

I compete my Hanovarian ex BSJA mare Katie who is very fizzy and hyper and is great at the sport. She doesnt like standing still for to long and starts jumping up and down on the spot. She is kept under control by me though and i can hold her in the start box with one hand. If you cant control your horse then its time to get out. Blaming it on the sport is a sad excuse tbh. Some horses are just not suited to certain sports. It also helps to put in the training. :)
