Hi Everyone, Can anyone help me please, today i tried to start my horsebox converted 3.5t to find the battery was flat, i have brought it home to charge, can anyone tell me how long it will take to be fully charged,

Not happy got a show to go to on Saturday as well Tut

Please Help

Do you know why it was flat in the first place? Unless you left a light on, it may be worth getting a new battery. I had to replace one on my old transit 3.5t a few years ago, it was about £100. Otherwise an overnight charge should work (left the lights on once, the year before the battery died of its own accord).

Hi
Thank you for your reply
No lights have not been left on, it is a new build which I bought last July 2018 new conversion, battery was working three weeks ago when i turned it over, I just think it is because its not been out for months Only tried it last night due to wanting to go out to a show on Saturday it is on charge since last night hubby said leave it on till tomorrow and try it then and will run it down the motorway.

And it is not a battery that needs distilled water in it first, it just looks like a car battery but obviously bigger. it hopefully should be charged by tomorrow xx

If it has been flat for several days it may be goosed. Do you have a tracker fitted, as that can draw power from the battery when the vehicle is standing. Also, check to see if all of the internal lights go off when the doors are closed and, if it has a living area, that something like the fridge isn't drawing power.

Check that the alternator and regulator are working right. There is a gadget that will do this, and also check the state of your battery. Otherwise, there are ways to check using a multi-meter or even just a 12V bulb and some wires; there are videos on Youtube that show these methods.

If the alternator and regulator are not working right, then even if you fit a new battery, it might be run down driving to your destination, and leave you stranded there...

Assuming your van is a diesel, and that the alternator is working, your battery is really only working when it is turning the starter motor. Once the engine is running, the alternator should be providing electricity to run all the circuits and to maintain the charge in the battery.

You really do not need the battery to fail while you have a horse on board. Best to buy a brand new one.

This, my lorry had new batteries 18months ago. It was left for 6 weeks during a cold spell with me forgetting to run it and battery was flat. We have had to replace as even though you can often charge them enough to start it, once drained they often don't hold charge well and will continue to go flat which isn't helpful if you are away from home and can't get back again !
