I'm thinking of buying a 3 horse lorry. Does anyone have any reputable companies that I could contact to see if they had a suitable lorry?

Budget is around £5k
Must carry 3 large horses
Well maintained, good interior/exterior, no rust etc
Ideally be taxed and must have plaiting

Open to suggestions.

You're probably best trying the usual websites and private as as doubt there's many dealers selling big horseboxes for that sort of price.

If you try horsemart you will find there are a lot of trade ads on there so that's probably the best way to find dealer sites.

However a box to carry 3 large horses you're going to struggle to find one for that budget that's going to tick all those boxes so think you may have to compromise a bit.

Having said that there are a few newer ones (therefore maybe not too much rust) about around the £6K to £7K mark.

These are fairly good examples

Just to add, I have been to view the last one on that list (Kent) and, although lovely, in my opinion you would not fit large horses in there as there is only 6ft 7" headroom (it was too small even for my 15hh mare). I hope it's ok to say that on here, just don't want you to have a wasted journey. It seems a very nice lorry though, other than that.

Oh, meant to say, I have been looking for a while and your budget is rather unrealistic for what you want. You can find some 3 horse lorries for £5K and under, but they will almost certainly be of an age where they have rust (most will actually be Ford Cargos in that price range and they are well known for rusting!) or not have a plating/very short plating etc. Good luck with your search though, it's a buyer's market right now so you can always try making an offer on a box you like which is a little over your budget.

Many thanks for your help. Its good to get opinions from people. I have never delved into the lorry market before, always had trailers.

The budget could possibly be raised if you think it will increase my chances of finding something. What would you suggest price wise to get my criteria?

And also what sort of lorry's to avoid i.e. Cargo's for their rusting.

sorry with budget stick to trailer......... if you double it, you'll be able to pick a nice 7.5ton, BUT most 7.5 will NOT CARRY 3 with living so for that you'll be looking at hunting box style
Only way to know if something is well maintain is to see evidence of paid bills plus take a good truck man along

Cargo parts are getting more difficult and therefore more expensive to get hold of, that's why lots of cargos look cheap!!

Look at Daf, Ford Iveco and Mans

what area are you? we are west yorks boss selling her old lorry its 3 horse 7.5 ton on a volvo. I dont know any details will get them this week when i go for photos she needs rid quick ( long story ) wanting 4.5k

You will find that most 7.5 ton lorries with some living may be stalled for 3 but it reality it will be 3 ponies. If you try & carry 3 large horses there is little doubt that you will be well over weight.

I think for a budget of £5k you will quite possibly buy yourself a 'money pit', either stick with a trailer & save up some more money

Before you hand over your money for a lorry take it to the weightbridge and get it weighed unladen!! then you will know what spare weight you have and then you can calculate how many horses plus all tack water people etc.. A 7 and a half ton lorry will struggle to carry 3 large horse.!!!

Try these people, run by father and son, if you can get to Northants/Bucks borders. Were very helpful when i was looking for smaller box, but as you can see on their website, they ahve a wide range of types and prices.Didn't buy from them in the end, long story, but they were helpful and seemed genuine.

What you want is a 7.5 ton Bedford TK. Keep an eye on E-Bay for one. (Type in Bedford TK). Despite what people say parts are still available. I have one that is 30 years old and still going strong. You should find a good one for about £1,500.00 but may find that you need to re-do the ramp and floor. As regards 3 horses you will need one that does not have any living in it at all and is quite basis so that it is not too heavy and with the 3 horses etc on board goes over 7.5 ton. Do you have a driving licence that allows you to drive a 7.5 ton?
