Hiya!
I looked at a horse box tonight, and its really nice, however I've come home to think about it before giving a decision on whether I want it or not tomoro! I have a few queries and wondering if you guys could help :)

So, its VW LT35, and its a 2.5 Diesel (not turbo'd that I know of), is this gonna struggle with having neddie in it going up hills?

Also the gears are a bit weird, like there back to front if you see what I mean, I didn't find it too bad, just weird at first, and due to its age, was a bit harder to find the right gear slots as such (totally not mechanically minded!) did you get used to this? I think I will but I just need reassurance!!

Where do you guys get your cheap insurance from? I'm 22 and cheapest I've found is £500, which I'll pay if I have to, but cheaper would be nicer :)

Anymore stuff you can dish on this sort of horsebox would be lovely, as its a really nice box, but I don't want to buy it and be dissapointed!!

Thanks :)

I was advised against VW 3.5t as they are quite high of the ground for a small box and can rock about quite a bit. If you want a 3.5t you would be better going for a van type. As for insurance, try Anthony Evans - I think they are the cheapest. x

LT 35 is a basic but reliable truck. The remote gearlever does cause a few problems due to wear and soforth. Check your weights carefully ,that you can carry your horses legaly. Also ,as these have a cambelt(and an injector pump belt, find out for certain when they were last changed and if they are still well within life. If in any doubt ,get them changed.Parts are easy to come by and they are easy to work on. You will probably find thatyou will have to change ball joints on the steerin/suspension,occasionaly ,as it is old ,but this is all easy stuff.I would say that you must have it looked at by a good mechanic, and check the chassis carefuly for rust. They are a nice ,handy little truck.

Our old lorry was a VW LT 35. Was super reliable and an ok drive (took 2 14.2hh and coped ok with most hills).

As has already been said it was quite high off the ground which was a bit of a downside.

Have used the van ones too but they didn't come across as so sturdy . . .

We now have a 6.5t but I (STILL!!) haven't got round to taking my test so am still relying on mum to drive!!! But have at least done the theory now so have made a start . . . .

Also, its quite high off the ground, does that 55cm rule about how far the box is off the ground apply to boxes under 3.5 tonnes?

Yes, I believe it does as the lorry will still require a plating . . . don't quote me on it though!

No, it applies to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. Also vehicles under 3.5 tonnes do not need a "plating" if you mean a trip to a VOSA test centre. They can be MOT'd by a normal garage that tests class 7 vehicles.

My friend had one of them and they are only big enough to travel ponies, i am yet to see one advertised etc that you can get a horse in.

Awesome, thanks for all that :)

We've measured the box internally to be 100% sure that it'll fit the neds :)

Just need to find some insurance now, hmmmmmm?

:)
