I've just bought a new (to me, very old in reality

) horse box. The back ramp is very heavy, it's made of wood and metal, it very nearly came down on my head yesterday

, but, when I pull it down, it hovers about a foot off the ground

It has a spring either side of it.

How can it be really heavy for me to manage, but to light to stay on the ground?

Is there a trick to this?

Sounds like the springs are worn/needing adjusted. They are supposed to control the speed that the ramp comes down and give you an 'assisted lift', putting it up, I'm no expert tho, I am sure someone will be along.
