I am looking into buying a horsebox a 3 horse with live in 7.5 tonne non hgv and I was wondering whether any of you lovely people had any recommendations on make /type and if anyone can give me an idea on insurance costs. This is all very new too me as we have spent ten years with a truck and trailer and now we are going further afield and going out more often have decided it time to upgrade but want to have all my facts before I take the plunge x

I have driven cargos for years, and they've all been very reliable apart from rust issues. I do all my own servicing, etc on my lorry, and asked my friendly breakers yard what was the best lorry to buy now, as cargo parts are very hard to source. They said to always go for leyland daf 45's as they are very easy to work on, and parts are easy to get hold of. I've taken their advice and bought one, as they are a big breakers of lorries and know better than most the ins and outs of all the different makes. My lorry insurance is with NFU and with a full no claims bonus, my insurance fully comp was around £170. Hope this helps.

first and most important is how much were you thinking of spending ?? Oakley make nice lorrys or are you on a tight budget like most of us???

I have an Iveco, think its the Tector and you wouldnt know it had horses in it. I was told not to buy one by an Iveco hating mechanic, even though he did say mine drove well????
The mechanic I use now reckons theres nothing wrong with Iveco, that they all have there faults but that Ivecos are cheap to repair, parts cheap etc and he said they proper workhorses that go on forever.
Before I bought mine, I did drive a MAN, it was lovely, just like a big car. Why didnt I buy it?, it didnt have a tilt cab and I was told I must get a tilt cab.
My friend has an older DAF, lovely box and has been very reliable.

Oh forgot to say, my insurance is about £210 for me and hubby fully comp with NFU. I have got breakdown on top of that.

If you buy a 7.5 ton horsebox with some reasonable living you will probably find that you will be over weight if you have 3 horses in it. Most 7.5 ton lorries may be stalled for 3 but you would only be able to put either 2 horses or 3 ponies to keep within the weight limit.

I have a Tristar box with living. These are renowned for being light construction & my payload is 1.9 tons, which is high for a lorry with living. You would think that with that allowance I could carry 3 horses wouldn't you. With my weight, wife & daughter, tack, water, fuel etc etc my payload would shrink to around 1.5 tons. I could carry 3 ponies but if I was to load 3 x 16h2" horses I would certainly be overweight.

To carry 3 full up horses, tack etc etc & have living & remain within weight there is only one real way of doing it legally & that's get yourself a HGV because a 7.5 ton lorry is unlikely to have the payload.
