Just wondering what I'd get for my money? I don't really want to go down the jeep and trailer route as I use my car for work so it has to be economical - I also feel safer in a lorry for some reason!

Would need to carry two 15.2 horses of TB build (so around 1,000 kg) and obviously tack etc.

Don't really want to go for a 7.5 tonne if possible as the lanes to my new yard are not exactly wide

Any ideas gratefully received!

Most 3.5 ton lorrys have a payload of between 1100 & 1200kg so when you add the weight of yourself plus any passenger & tack to the weight of your horses it is unlikely you will be able to carry 2 in a 3.5 ton. They are really one horse or 2 pony to remain in weight.

Well my 2004 3.5t cost me a good few grand over that last week. It has a 1.25t payload so you'd have to be VERY careful with your weights if you wanted a 3.5t, a 5.5t or similar would be better.

We did go to see an R Reg 3.5t that had been coverted by Marlborough (who do nice conversions) however the vehicle itself was a rust bucket. They wanted £6,000 for it and we declined.

My friends just brought a new 3.5 tonne and the payload is 1500, unfortunately out of my price range ;-)

Maybe I'll have to go for a 7.5 then, I can drive it on my licence so that's not an issue!

I know people who have brought completely useless boxes because they 'look pretty' so yes, I will be taking someone with me who knows what they're doing ;-)

I think a 5.5 would be perfect, although the annoying thing is I would mostly only be transporting 1 horse.

you can get nice ones for that range, if you wait.
my friend got a 3.5t with about 55k miles and cctv etc, very smart coachbuilt for 9k, with average 1.2t payload.
get it inspected before you buy and a weigh bridge cert!
