Firstly, thanks everyone. I know I did the right thing at the time but to be honest I did not know if the farmer was a good shot or knew what he was doing, I just knew that we could not let the horse suffer. Actually, after the initial panic (which was terrible, the mare fell several times as tried to put leg down) she was very calm and sedate. She just stood quietly whilst my friend was inconsolable. The mare was loosing a lot of blood and it was pumping so I knew she would weaken quickly. Another friend with us held the mare and I led the horses away. I put my fingers in my ears so didn't hear the shot. I went to the friends house that night and we cried a lot and I just couldn't say sorry enough times. She never held it against me and never blamed me but we never really met up again. We smile and say hello now if we meet but never mention it. I sold my youngster, I just did not want to ride him anymore. It was a tragic accident, she came up too close and fast and it frightened him, he caught her inside her hind leg above the hock, not much of a kick really but just caught her wrong. Thanks for all your replies. x

god that must have been so so awful :( no ones fault, but terrible anyway :( its great your friend didnt blame you or hold it against you, but i can imagine it must have never been the same after. you definatly did the right thing, xxx *hugs*

I read your other thread to but didn't comment as what everyone else has said covered it, but this sounds like the most awful situation I can't imagine how awful it must have been for you both. You did the right thing not to let the horse sudder. Sorry to hear this happened

What an awful situation to be in and I really feel for you. It was the right thing to do and it was a tragic accident. Love and hugs to you xx

I am so sorry. I can't imagine how you would ever get over something like that. you are very brave.

Well done for keeping a cool head, I understand the horse's owner being hysterical but somebody needed to take charge which you did. I think you did the best you could in a horrible situation, good of the farmer to do what he did as well.
I remember years ago a farmer I know shooting a horse with a broken leg, I would prefer a vet doing it but it's not always possible for the vet to get there quickly & the welfare of the horses has to come first, which it did it this situation.

I read the original post - but very briefly. That is such a horrible situation, and cannot imagine how you must feel.

Was it your friends horses, and you made the decision to have the horse shot (did she actually give you permission)- or was it your horse?
