Horse breaks leg on hack - would you let local farmer shoot it?

You defiantly did the right thing and i would do the same.

Bad injuries are obvious and if you knew it couldnt be fixed then its better to put the horse out of its pain then let is suffer waiting for a vet.

You know how long vets can take even to get to an emergency.

How awful
Absolutely the right thing to do, you couldn't let the poor horse suffer. I think you were very lucky he was there, willing & able to help out int hat manner.

I would def go with the farmer option. Problem can arise it seems if police are involved. Accident in Bitton last year when pony obviously fatally injured, vet not contacted by police (major c@ck up) and they wouldn't let a local farmer shoot it. Pony bled to death. Since been review by emergency services as a result of this and shouldn't happen again.

The majority of people have said farmer, i definately agree...thats because all of us that have said it have common sense. People like that who own horses and behave like that give us a bad name and have no common sense.

What an awful situation to be in; ditto to everything that has been said. This was an emergency, a horrendous situation, and you facilitated what had to be done and to be honest there was no alternative at the time. It wouldn't have been humane to have waited for the vet and anyway the poor horse, if it hadn't bled to death, it would have been in awful agony and distress.

There is obviously still a lot of heartache and trauma surrounding this incident for you; perhaps you are blaming yourself, or whatever, but dealing with awful things like this are not easy and you need to regard it as you would any other major (traumatic) incident that you might be involved in.

You are doing a good thing in that you are talking about it with other like-minded (horsey) people; and that is the best thing often; no doubt you will have others in your network locally and they will be hopefully able to support you and allow you to put it behind you and move on. You did what you had to do, if the horse could speak he would thank you for it.

Well done on your quick thinking and the luck of having a Farmer with a gun so close by.

Terrible thing to happen and my heart goes out to you and your friend.

We had a horse that escaped in our village and got hit by a car, The police arrived and after contacting a vet and being told it would be at least 30 mins before they could come out the poilce arranged for a armed police patrol car to attend and the police marksman shot the horse!!!

This was before the days of passports and micro chips and to this day we don't know who that horse belonged to!!?!!

Anyway, very sorry to hear of your ordeal.

What a horrendous situation to have found yourself in. I cannot imagine how awful that must have been.

Echo the others. horse's welfare must always come first & 30 mins of slow death waiting for the vet is a VERY long time for it to be suffering.

and yes, as Enfys said, sod the insurance, if that were to be a concern
