Horse Breeds You Didn't Even Know Existed?

I did know about the Boerperd, but only because my husbands grandfather was one of the original breeders of the horse. He helped invent the breed.

My husbands other grandfather bred the first Straight Egyptian Arab in SA.

I rode one of those in India, lovely fiesty little horses. I'd have one in a heartbeat.

Until I moved to Spain I had no idea about the Navarran Pony.

There is also another breed here, one of my students owns two mares and is often riding them bareback and leading the other. He promises to let me ride, but I refuse to get on without my helmet so have to wait till Xmas before I can go get it! One looks like a giant exmoor. So cute

I asked the breeder of the stud we rode at in Udapur. His English wasn't brilliant but he seemed to think they couldn't be imported because of West Nile Virus

Think there is a Marwari breeder in France and a couple in the states, but not sure. Don't think they like selling them out of the country.

Anyway, who's heard of the Assateague and Chincoteague horses? I'm useless at posting links, so you'll just have to Google them.

I was wondering too, looked it up on Wikipedia- okay, not the most scientific source- but it seems to confirm this, a guy called John Mulvihill started it.

I can't remember where I read about them, I think it said something about using DNA on ponies in Ireland to find ones that were the descendants of the original ponies and going from there.

I used to play a horse game on the internet that let people "customise" horses, and they used to make up some peculiar nonsense, as well as thinking types of horses were breeds - like the horses used by the household cavalry etc for Royal duties? These kids on the game wanted Windsor Grey, Royal Black and Regal Bay included as breeds, I do know they got "Drum Horse" included as a breed and had 3 or 4 variations on the coloured cob theme

I have a real soft spot for both the Boerperd and the Nooitgedacht... I am thinking of importing a few mares to UK in a few years time... I have a friend who is on the lookout for a few special mares atm.

BTW - CoD - could you reduce your pics pls - makes the thread difficult to read.. Perhaps have a word with TFC to change / delete the oversized pics....

And what about the old, possibly man-made UK breeds. Like the Shales Horse of East Anglia, the Norfolk Roadster, and the Galloway of the Scottish borders?

And, farther afield, what about the dancing ponies of ...is it Sri Lanka? Or Timor?

The Shales horse was probably derived from trotters of the time having an injection of Thoroughbred blood 'Original Shales' was a TB and his bloodlines were also in the Hackney. A lot of Suffolk and 'regional trotter' blood were over the years refined to produce the Hackney.

Do the Scottish Rhum ponies still exist? and the Mount Ainos horses in Kefalonia?
