My 5yr old has suddenly started brushing his hind legs over the last 10 days-2 weeks. Lateral work seems to improve it for a short amount of time but would it be worth getting some body work done on him- shiatsu or massage perhaps? Or try and work through it? Overall he seems to be using his hind end more..

My horse started doing this and it turned out he had a neuro condition which caused him to start brushing his hinds together. I had the farrier out to raise the inside of the hind shoes but he kept doing it, so I got the Mc Timoney Chiropractor out to see if he'd put his back out but there was nothing to be found.

In the end I resorted to a sausage boot but it didn't really help much and I got the McTimoney out again.

A few days later the horse had his first signs of ataxia (loss of co-ordination). This is what had been causing the rubbing.

It had followed a fall in the field onto his neck which had started calcification. Sadly he went on to develop CVM/Wobblers.

Would definitely be a good idea - while an unfit horse with poor muscle tone may brush while getting fit a horse suddenly developing this may have slipped out in the paddock and tweaked his back.
