Horse can't keep shoes on

my point is that however you choose to keep your horses feet its not the horse that cant keep the shoes on its your farrier-

I'm sorry but I do not agree with you.

Too many people pressure their farriers over lost shoes and the farrier ends up shoeing too short and too tight to try to keep the customer happy. Many horses tread off their shoes when very well shod, escpecially those which are more active behind than in front. The answer, partially , is over-size overreach boots, not blaming your farrier.

My farrier told me on one of his visits that in a survey of customers by the WCF almost everyone judged how good their farrier is by how well their horses shoes stayed on.......I think that speaks volumes about how uneducated a lot of people are about their horses hooves.....I admit to being one of them in the past. (unfortunately)

i dont disagree with the oversize overreach boots, my daughters horse wears them but its at my farriers request, so my very good farrier has advised a course of action to help prevent the loss of the shoes. i cannot hold him responsible for a horse that over-reaches, but i would hold a farrier responsible for not advising using orb or horses just losing shoes

Apart from over reach surely the main reason horses lose shoes is hoof wall quality? Repeated nailing causes weakness and bug ingress and having to replace shoes causes problems finding someway to nail that hasn't already been used. It's not like nailing to a piece of wood, we are talking about a living structure where nailing options are very limited even in a healthy hoof.

ps. Have a look at the photo on this blog post which shows how tight the nailing option is. http://barefoothorseblog.blogspot.ie/2010/12/do-horse-shoes-hurt-horses.html

i agree with this too and my farrier would advise that shoes are left off for a minimum of 3 months and then reviewed-my previous post was not clear and poorly worded. it would be accurate to state that a farrier has a responsibility to care for the feet and give advice to the person responsible for the horse/pony, and the advice given should have the animals best interest at heart.
i expect advice on diet, excersize, bedding, routine and shoeing/trimming from my farrier and if barefoot and rest is best i would expect him to tell me so, in return i do listen to his advice and discuss things with him if i have other ideas that i feel may work
