hi i have a 4yr old ex racehorse, he came from ireland in june to surrey having never raced as too slow (apparantly!) the thing is he came with a slight dry cough, doesnt do it much when ridden and just now and again when in his stable and field. hes on shavings and i dont add any or do his bed while he is in there and he has soaked hay and feed. the thing we noticed is that he also has a dry neigh, it almost sounds like he cant neigh and just makes this dry squeal. has anyone come across this before? have decided to have the vet out at the end of the week to check both things out, his cough hasnt got any worse but no better either. he doesnt whistle or make any noises when ridden.

hi i didnt have him vetted as he was given to me, in fact i didnt even see a picture of him! he was sent to the sales but didnt sell, i know the risks of this as ive been here once before with another free ex racehorse. thought about hobdayed or possible tieback, have spoken to the person in ireland who heard about him and as far as she was aware he had had no injuries, illness or anything else, will ask the vet, did try and google non neighing horse but not much came up!

hes a very happy and healthy 4yr old otherwise, very soppy! just sounds a bit sad when hes calling to his friends and theres no proper neigh!

he came at around 15.3 but has had a growth spurt and is a good 16hh poss even 16.1 now, hes very dark brown almost black with a white star and a little bit of white on his hinds, hes filled out aswell as he was racing lean when he arrived so looks alot better now, would post pics but have no idea how to yet!

It does sound like some kind or wind operation, maybe thats why he was no good for racing, it should make no difference to you if it is but worth getting the vet to do a checkover i think. Weve got a horse at work thats been hobdayed he did 3 day eventing and showjumping!! But when he neighs its like a hoarse raspy sound rather than a neigh.

thanks for the replies, im not bothered either way if something has been done, as long as hes healthy, happy and not in pain then he has a home for life! from his laid back attitude and sweet nature you wouldnt guess hes a 4yr old ex racehorse! i know it was a huge risk taking him on having never seen him or knowing anything about him but whatever problems we come across i know i wont regret my decision!

Hello
the symptoms sound very similar to what my horse has and the previous owner who had him as a racehorse had the tie-back and Hobday operation done to open up the airway. He now has a very hoarse winny just as you desribed and he coughs when he starts exercising and also occasionally has mucus coming out of his nose. I have had him for over 4 years and not encountered any problems with him as a result of these wind operations.
