Horse charities

Some are great, some are rubbish. Some do a wonderful job helping unwanted horses, others exist simply to line the pockets of unscrupulous people.

Same as any other charity, really.

The thing I hate about all charities is thyat as soon as you make a donation I'm sure they sell on your information to others because you are suddenly inundated with begging envelopes from every other animal charity.

This puts me off ever bothering to donate again!

I have never heard of this before. Are they allowed to? Thats terrible.

Well, as someone has said some do a fantastic job, but i hate the begging letters, the books of raffle tickets and other mail wanting your money, i know animal welfare is a big problem and that the charities need every penny but i have to look out for the welfare of my own horse, also another little bug bear is some charitites that re home there horses and ponies are quite fussy, even down to what type of fencing you have!!!! if you have the time, money and love to take on a rescued horse does it matter? maybe its just me?

No it is not just you. Feelings like this do need airing.

I am wary of causing offence with my reply, knowing that you run one. Generally, I would not support any animal charity when there are so many humans suffering, although I do support the Brooke, as they work with animals and the people who own them. I also applaud the ILPH for their campaigning to stop live horse transport. In my opinion, some of the larger animal charities (RSPCA, RSPB etc) spend a vast amount of donations on advertising, uniforms, offices etc etc - far more than I would think necessary, especially in view of the reluctance of the RSPCA to actuallyrespond to any calls. Some, not all, smaller charities seem to have a sentimental approach to horses which defeats their purpose. I am not a believer in keeping a horse alive at any cost, especially if that horse is ill, dangerous or unlikely to be easily rehomed. I think to run any sort of charity efficiently you have to be fairly dispassionate and logical - which is why I don't!

Well said, Sooty - I second that. I support Brooke on a monthly basis and also ILPH for much the same reasons. I wouldn't give to charities such as The Horse Trust, which has somewhere in the region of £18m tucked away, but a really narrow remit.

On a local level I used to support The Remus Horse Trust, because they were round the corner from where I lived and they manage on next to nothing in income, but personally I could not justify spending large amounts of money on relatively few horses, when so many people are suffering. I try not to be sentimental with animals, I would never let mine suffer, but nor would I spend a fortune to keep one alive.

Another Brooke monthly supporter here.
Remus is specialising in elderly horse care--we can all learn from their experience.
We may need the Horse Trusts millions to fund the AHT with research into AHS vaccine etc so may not be a bad thing one equine charity being rich--so is the Donkey Sanctuary I think
I volunteer with BHS Welfare so prepared to 'stick my nose in' at local horse sale or chat to folk at local events, discuss problems and try to help--for the good of the horse.

It is good to stick your nose in as you say, in a nice way. As i have said before anyone can help - or not - as they wish.

What anoys me with many charities is their refusal to put down an animal that would probably be better off put down. It also annoys me when they scream for funds but refuse to rehome animals that are perfectly able to go to loan homes, even if they have medical problems. Not all loanees are incapable/inexerienced in caring for animals with special needs.
I also hate the way they spend so much money sending out gifts in the hope that the recipient will feel they must 'pay' for this by donating.

Not ALL do, I support EMW and they don't. I don't get begging letters from them, just a polite email every now and then that says if you don't want to hear any more let us know. They do put down animals if needed, they re-home, they are involved at the highest levels trying to influence change, and it is run by volunteers so I know where my money goes.
That's the only horse charity I support, you can't help them all so I had to choose.
