Hi,

I bought the new horse a jointed rubber hanging cheek snaffle to replace the happy mouth she came with (as it was damaged) and she has chewed it all to bits in only a week. How is she managing to chew it when there are no teeth where the bit sits? Any ideas?

I can hear her sqeaking it when she chews even when she is just walking. I thought she was just "gumming" it but it is all gnawed

I wish I knew too! My boys bits are full of chew marks but then he draws his tongue back and I presume pushes his bit back and some how chews it. Vet did his teeth the other day and commented on how strong his tongue was

. He was sedated and managed to trap the vets hand against his teeth by drawing his tongue back.

When I was breaking my TBx in I got her a training bit - she bit right thru it in seconds!!! Went straight into a sweetiron snaffle after that

My TB mare did exactly the same thing with jointed rubber bits, and I went through quite a few bits in the course of a couple of months. I wanted to keep her in a rubber bit rather than a metal one but i have found that with a straight bar Happy Mouth bit she doesn't seem to have chewed it, and now it seems to have broken the habit. I have ridden her more recently in a double jointed happy mouth, and she hasn't chewed that either.
I do think that while the Happy Mouths are more expensive they do seem to stand up to being used better than the cheaper rubber bits.
