Horse chomps dentist!!!!

Sorry for the exciting title....

We had the detist yesterday and whilst treating my horse the gag (hausmann) closed and the dentist on just hot her arm free. The implication was that the horse had done this but I've never seen that happen before - goodness knows what would have been the outcome if he had trapped her arm - a humungeous claim for damages I guess!!

Also, what do you think of a professional who treats horses accompanied by a small child? I don't think it is right as attention should be given to the patient, not one's offspring!
 
umm, if she'd clicked both sides of the gag properly, this should have been impossible, i think.
i wouldn't mind a small child coming along at all, as long as it was well-behaved and didn't wander off into fields/up to other horses, etc etc.
 
I've never seen it happen before either. Could the gag have been faulty or not fitted correctly?

Agree with you re. being accompanied by a small child. Definitely not right and I would be very unimpressed.
 
We use the EDT that works in conjunction with our vet. There are a lot of people out there who advertise for doing teeth. I got bitten once about 15 years ago, we had a women come to our yard, within two days of her visit my horse was in the vets with a split tooth and abscess, since then I have always used the same guy and have never had that happen with the gag and Stuart makes a point of showing and making you feel where the problems are in the mouth.
 
My mare got the gag off her mouth by swinging her head up high and rearing.
I wouldn't mind a small child coming as long as they did what they were told.

Agree as someone has said above - if the gag had been clicked in properly, I can't see how that would be possible under normal conditions, unless it was faulty in some way.

Re child, for safety reasons more than anything else, I think it is unprofessional of a professional such as a Dentist to bring a young child into the yard when they are treating a horse, if they were a friend or knew you then that is different.
 
My horse managed to click one of the steps to the gag closed, the vets reply was "ow had better get it re-set" or something like that. I think the gist was that they do get alot of wear and need new clips every now or have to be replaced completely.
I don't mind children as long as there well behaved!
 
She probably didnt click the gag in place fully as she was concentrating on the child.

I think taking the child with her was unprofessional.
 
Jesus, the gag doesnt just shut unless it was not put on properly, which is proabably the case. Taking your child to work with her would be a breach of insurance (if she had any) and is a definate no no!
 
Thank you - I did carefully check that the new dentist was BEVA approved etc. The issue with the child is purely a practical one. With both dentist & owner in the stable there was nobody watching said child and a yard is full of dangers from mucking out equipment ti other horses!!
 
can you PM me her name to see if i know her? if she is BEVA qualified it was probably just "one of those things" and bringing her child to work is prob not the best thing but she must have had a reason to do so. If she is BEVA qualified, believe me she would have gone through hellishly hard/stressful exams and would be v good.
