Horse came in from field this evening unable to put weight on right hind (he had apparently managed to get his hind leg caught up in his belly strap (no idea how as rug fits well and belly straps not loose)).

Got vet out asap as worried about him not putting weight on it. Vet checked for abcess and everything else and thinks could be tweak to suspensory (but wants to xray to see things more clearly). So is coming back tomorrow to do all this.

I'm really worried about it all as he isn't normally injury prone and is my first horse, so this is the first time I've gone through this kind of thing. I had assumed he had just hurt his leg being caught up in the belly strap and was in all honesty calling vet out for peace of mind. Is it likely that getting his leg caught up could tweak his suspensory? Will it mean weeks of box rest and very slow work?

Sorry for all the questions and I know the vet will be back tomorrow but am worried sick for my boy and just wanted to see if anyone else had had a similar experience?

Calm down and wait for a definite diagnosis before you start to worry. He may have damaged a number of things, equally he may just be stiff from having a leg trap. Hope its good news and he is better this morning.

is it swollen?
YOs mare got her leg stuck in her rug straps and rubbed her legs horribly.she was lame but it was purely due to the amount of bruising and swelling.
hope its nothing serious.

Afraid it was swollen and serious. He is at vet college now. Has had two ops for infected tendon sheath (re infection after first one). We are praying it does not re infect again.
