Horse comes in from field hopping lame...... oppinions please!

You see this sort of thing always puzzles me. ''Bothered' to turn up''' - perhaps having come out previously, this was the earliest opportunity that they could get back out? And as for not bothering to poke around in the foot - presumably he and the owner had a discussion about the best cause of action, and it was felt it better done by the vet???

We can, as owners, actually ask questions of people and ask them to do things. We don't have to stand around 'waiting' for it to happen........

Actually he is normally very good, but he kept saying he would come and then never turned up, owner had asked for him to have a good look and had offered to payed him extra to come out as it was an emergency.

This sort of thing "puzzles me" I originally asked what you guys though could be wrong with the horse so I could go back to owner and say, look this is what I have been advised and then try to get her to realise how serious this could be! But as usual on here there is always one!

Dont agree, all the farriers I know would be out the same day to a hopping lame horse, thats what they keep a bit of time free for, and why they cant always get to you to replace a shoe

I have never used a farrier who wouldn't (except one and he was quickly replace)

I agree with you Rockysmum - in principle. And in all honesty my farrier would do his upmost to get to me the same day. However, sometimes it's just not possible.

I also felt it was a bit unfair to comment on whether the farrier 'decided' to turn up or not - especially after the procastination of the owner in getting her horse treated. And as I said, presumably he and the owner discussed the merits of digging the foot out, and decided jointly together that the vet was the better way forward. If this was not the case, shame on the owner for not asking the farrier to investigate further.

I'm only exhibiting frustration at an owner who seems incapable of doing anything pro-active for their horse - not the OP.

The reason we haven’t taken the shoe off is the mare has typical TB feet and owner has had countless amounts of problems with crumbling feet etc and farrier advised against taking shoe off ourselves.

I have a TB - he has "typical TB feet". He's barefoot and crunches over most things, and bunts my rasps! My lad's feet were similarly poor until I realised the shoes were creating a viscious cycle and keeping them that way.

There is no such thing as "typical TB feet" - these are ideopathic. Shoes, environment, diet - all comspire to create "typical TB feet"

But...barefoot's not for everyone. Asks a lot from the owners really.

Gosh I am glad something has finally been sorted for this poor mare.
My TB came to me with an absess that the owner thought would just 'sort itself out'. Sounds very similar. Leg swollen, very lame. Vets came immediately & he was in for xrays and tests the next day to be sure that the bone hadn't also become infected.
It's a shame the farrier wasn't more prompt. I must be lucky in that the last time mine came in hopping, my farrier drove an hour in the dark in rush hour to get to him! He immediately found the absess and got in draining along with standing with me for 1/2 hr while it was tubbed.
A good farrier is worth his weight in gold especially in situations like this poor mares.
Hope she makes a good recovery now that absess can drain properly.

so pleased that you have got to the bottom of this. lets hope that with pain relief ect the mare will be feeling brighter.
let us know how she gets on.
