Hi I was wondering if anyone can help me , I have a 15.3 8 year old Irish draught/tb
She is a very good jumper put a single fence up and she wil jump anything! She's very bold and never scared of anything in the slightest , if we take her cross country she is fantastic gives everything and jumped big over everything. But recently when out show jumping usually 90-100cm she is constantly having 4-8 faults with having fences down, don't no what to do , sometimes I end up getting into a bit of a fight with her on way into jump as she gets so strong, currently ride her in a universal gag bit but open to any suggestions , just want to start jumping clear rounds with her as she definitely can do it . At hope we practice lots of grids and often use placing poles that does seem to help at the time but as soon as we get to show we have fences down.
Thanks for any help
:))

Get someone to video you jumping her see if you can see what's happening with her or your riding.

And as already said an instructor would e a help perhaps.

I would suggest improving the canter quality, strength and power on the flat so it is easier for the horse to maintain a correct balanced canter round the whole course.

Find a good instructor and ask for help, or at least video yourself and analyse your riding properly. Look at what you do, slow-mo it, and rip it to shreds. Be brutal. Or post on here, and get people to do that for you ;)

Analysing your own riding and being strict with yourself is a really hard thing to do but it's a useful skill.

If it's just at competition, if she's getting excited maybe she's just not concentrating on you? Get her out to some clear rounds during the week, go practice jumping at a hired arena, get out to do a class each weekend. Get her to a point where going out is the norm, nothing to get excited about, so she just listens to you.

She's probably just excited being out, it's a case of practice makes perfect if she'd fine jumping courses at home.

Sounds bizarre but a friends mare did this. Tried everything the out her on naf Ostress and she stopped. She wasn't Marian I think she was just a bit more tense and uncomfortable with her ovaries etc shes now on it all year round but if she comes off she has a pole again. Maybe speak to naf to see if you can get a free trial. The liquid also works better than the powder I've heard xx

If she is a good jumper and not normally careless, then the problem is most likely that you are strangling the canter and the power on the approach. You have to make sure even on a strong horse that you are very soft with your hands as you get closer to the fence. And you also have to make sure you release your hands properly as you go over. Horses need a surprising amount of neck room as they go over a fence and a lot of people don't give with their hands enough. With a horse that is strong when jumping, sometimes you have to just do quite a few jumps until they calm down, rather than trying to have a physical fight with them.

Are the fences high enough that she respects them. My ISH is less careful with lower fences.

^^ I agree, my gelding used to be the same, he used to run at 100miles per hour and fly over the fences. Yes he was an amazing jumper but after awhile he got a bit lazy and knocked some fences down.

My trainer told me give him something to look at... so up when the 3ft6triple bar... and he picked up beautifully! and after awhile he even slowed down and concentrated.
