In the uk on average how much does it cost to keep your horse of which would be in light to moderate work and what does everything approx cost?? i have rough ideas on a list ect but just want to see how it varies!
So - at a very rough estimate my winter costs are about £750+ per month which includes feed, bedding, haylage, DIY livery, shoeing, insurance. Then you need to add lessons, transport costs, shows, tack and equipment, vet bills, worming etc etc. So - put quite simply (and bearing in mind your other post trying to convince your parents to get you a horse) the costs can be frightening!! In fact - don't let your parents see this as it's more than most people's mortgages!!!
Depends where you are in the country mine costs just over £250 a month including insurance and farrier but not including any bits i might buy - new rugs, boots etc.
i worked out how much my friend spent on her a year, which was £15000ish. this is just the basics:
- livery inc. bedding, feed
- farrier (every 6 weeks)
- physio
- dentist
it doesnt include any bits and bobs or the saddle fitter, or anyone else that you may have to get to come and check your horse!! and this is a fairly cheap part livery too...
In my experience........work out all the costs - livery, feed, vacs, shoes, contingencies, tack etc. take that figure, double it and you'll be somewhere close!!!! Love our boys, but the most parasitic animal nature has ever produced!!! Spent £90 quid this weekend just on back massages after they had a fight when neither landed a punch but both put their backs out bucking!!!
Gotta luv 'em!
Mines £370 pm full livery so includes turnout, bring in, rug changes, light groom, hay, bedding and basic hard feed not that she needs much of that, muck out, skip out and the YO lunges her for me if I'm away with work.
Insurance is £29 pm
Farrier £30 pm (shod every 8 weeks £60 per full set)
I allow £300 per month for both mine and my daughters shettie per month on diy. In summer I have quite A lot left over which I spend on getting rugs etc washed, new ones bought, extra lessons, kit myself out with any new gear I need before the winter expenses kick in. This year my big purchase will be some new rubber matting
My insurance does come out of bank and isn't included which is a further £40 a month for both.
I do feel doing it the way I do saves the guilt of buying extra bits and bobs as I just have a kitty for the month.
Each of my Fuzzy's are budgeted at approx £1000 pa (each) this balances out as biggest is shod all round, little one is unshod.
This includes shoeing, hay, bedding, hard feed, wormers & routine jabs.
Not included is yard & field maintenance, any additional vet bills/visits, replacement of saddlery/rugs etc.
Also not included is the financial bribery of lovely neighbour who steps in as 'Auntie' when I need to be away on occasions.
Its my yard..... no livery to be factored in, they mainly live out - tho in at night from late November till mid March, depending on weather & ground conditions.
