Why is my horse coughing?? :confused:I think it started when I gave him hay but im not quite sure. Im afraid it might be the start of equine flu or strangles. Any ideas on what it could be. When is the best time to give the Equine Flu and Tetanus vaccine? Would it be okay to give them at this time of year ? Can I give them if he has a cold??:) Any help would be Brillll:)

If you think it started after you gave him hay it will probably be dust in the hay causing the cough. Try soaking it for half an hour to remove all the dust. If it was the flu your horse would be quite poorly and would have discharge coming down his nose too and would be very lethargic. If you are worried maybe call the vet.

ditto above - sounds like the spores in the hay causing it. Soak for a while before feeding. Has anything else changed in the routine?
Flu/tetanus are annual/biannual vaccines - there isn't a best time as far as i'm aware.

Is he stabled? If so what bedding are you using as may be reacting to it.

Also I would take him of hay completely and use haylage instead if you can, and make sure all feed is dampened down.

There are several equine cough mixes/breathing supplements on the market - Naf do a good one called Respiraze.

Speak to your vet re vaccine - they can have it any time of yr but if is already ill don't see that it can solve your problem. Also if cough persists it may be a vet job anyhow as you don't want to compromise his wind.
