My mare (Cob/Welsh) has recently started coughing in the past week or so. It is a dry cough, she has no nasal discharge and she’s never had a cough before in her life. Is this due to pollen/allergies? She lives out all year round and isn’t on hay. Anyone else currently having this issue?

It could be - but coughing in horses should always be a vet visit because their cough reflex isn't as sensitive as ours. That means when they start coughing the lungs have got very irritated.

Pollen count is high this week but I'm guessing you haven't had a problem in previous years?

I haven’t had an issue in previous years no. I will be phoning the vet today - thank you for your response :)

One of my horses started coughing for the first time ive known him last year (7-20 years old), but a short course of an inhaler did the trick and he so far hasnt coughed again. It was during one of the mid summer 'pollen bombs' so suspect allergies. Will see what happens around the same time this year and if it does show any signs will be on the inhaler and antihistamines quickly.

That’s very helpful thank you. She is 14 and the first time she’s ever had a cough .

My retired horse coughs at this time of year, then again in the autumn. It's pollen rated. I have had him nearly 20 years and it's always the same. It took me a few years and vets visits to realise what it was! I syringe benylyn down if it gets annoying for me!!
