Horse coughing when exercised

This is not my horse, but something that made me a bit concerned. The horse doesn't cough in the stable or in the field (as far as I know, I don't see him that often though tbh- so he may do)

The horse is fine ridden in walk and canter, but in trot he coughs! He looks like he stretches down to work longer- but then coughs and carries on, and will cough several times throughout the session.
He is very unfit as he's been left in a field for a while- not too fat but a tad porky and certainly lacking muscle, after 15 minutes schooling he is huffing and puffing and of course coughing in trot.

It's not really any of my business and the owner doesn't seem to think there is any cause for concern, but no horses I've ever been involved with have responded to work like that. So any ideas what could be the problem? and maybe the owner will address the issue if I can give her some information

There have been a number of horses coughing this year. I have had two in my yard. One had a virus and the second one a "Upper Respiratory Irritation" due to pollen

The first one I stopped working and gave him a blood booster, propell Plus.

He second one I gave him some Hay Fever relief Homopathic pills and some Respirator Boost from NAF. Another good one is Kof Eze again from NAF.

That's worth knowing- I will pass on the information and it's up to her what she does ! Unfortunately every time symptoms show up she says they are being 'drama queens' so I'm just trying to prove that is not the case..

COPD may be a possibility. I owned a pony a long time ago with it. Avoid dust! Actually think I have it myself.

As well as other suggestions could be an issue from birth re: air way thru laryngx that can cause whistling and coughing on exercise too.
