Hi,

I am a long standing member on here however posting under a new username in an effort to not be identified by anyone who may know me.

I am enquiring as to who would be the best people to contact in the event of horse cruelty.

I have informed the RSPCA and world horse welfare however would like any other contacts also to report to.

Thank you so much

I think it completely depends on the area you are in as to which is best to contact, the main ones are RSPCA (especially if legal proceedings are going to be likely) WHW or BHS, in some areas Redwings have welfare officers, and HAPPA also have welfare officers working in some areas.....

If you haven't got an other major horse charities or welfare organisations in your area and RSPCA and WHW have failed to do anything as of yet, then contacting local horse sanctuaries/charites however small can help. Sometimes the larger organisations are more likely to step in if these complain, in my experience. However, it depends on the circumstances and whether it would be accessible for them to check. WHW will only speak to someone who has actually seen the horse rather than going by the word of others.

I have been within close proximity to said horses, as have the others who are willing to report the owner. The issue is various matters, lack of water, appropriate feed (emaciated, field full of poisonous weeds), major infestations of skin conditions, never seen dentist, vet, wormers, farrier. Owner rarely visits horses.

I am extremely grateful of any contacts - the closest I am willing to say is the horses are located in the East Midlands. Thanks

1. Locally = BHS welfare officer, WHW or RSPCA
2. Council - ask for the animal welfare officer if they have one
3. Local vet
4. Or to your local trading standards dept - they only (apart from Police) have legal stature.

You can drop me a PM - will be able to put you in touch with your local BHS welfare rep or can help if you are local to me, or at the very least the right person to talk to at BHS welfare dept.

Ok, please call the BHS welfare dept tomorrow morning - will you do that?
They might already be dealing with a case, but will be happy to take as much info as you can provide.
They will only ask for your phone number to let you know what they are doing & what the outcome is, should you wish to know. You dont have to give the number, but it sometimes helps to get a welfare officer on the scene more quickly if the location is not easily found.

Yes, I think I'll also drop them an email incase I dont have time in the morning to do so (and will also include a pic of one of them)

Thanks

All the organisations are really careful to protect your identity.

Agree that you should contact BHS welfare. They were INSTRUMENTAL in the Carrot and Spud case on here.....the RSPCA and others knew of the situation, but the BHS got things moving. Good luck x

The BHS have at least one fully trained volunteer wellfare officer in each county of Great Britain. Their contact details are in the BHS annual yearbook which every BHS Gold Member receives at the begining of each year.
Alternatively you can phone the BHS Welfare Hotline: 01926 707791 There is an out of hours voicemail message giving an emergency number.
