Hi,

I bought a horse recently who was not as described, and unfortunately i cannot ride her at all. The owner will not take her back and has since moved, so i don't think i have any chance of taking him to court!!

As I have not got the confidence or experience to ride her for a private sale, I wondered if anyone knows of any good dealers relatively local to me in Northampton??

Thanks in advance :o

Do you not have an experienced friend or could you not pay a local instructor to ride her for you for a sale? When you say you cant ride her, what does she do? If you are honest in your advert you may get people who are prepared to get on without having seen you do it first. Perhaps you could lunge her for perspective buyers? It just seems a shame to send her to a dealers without trying a private sale first although I am only too aware about how slow the market is for horses that are not 100% in every way!

i found myself in a similar situation- was truthful in my ad when describing my mare, her price reflected her bad behaviour, and i was truthful and careful over who i let view her. i sold her to a knowledgeable home without having to ride her when they came to view.

I bought her from a private seller, who described her as a 15 yr old all rounder who has done dressage, cross country etc who will hack out... I have had 1 ride in 3 months where she hasn't bucked or reared. One episode a few weeks ago landed me on the road, which has not happened ever in my 23 years of riding!!

I cannot do a circle in the school in anything other than a walk without her rearing... The other day I put her up into trot and he reared, carried on rearing so long that i didnt even have a chance to get off, and she has completely scared me so much (a close relative died last year in a riding accident so I am a bit nervy anyway!) that I do not want to get on her again.

I wonder if she was drugged when I went to try her out as honestly if she had acted like she has been when I tried her there is no way I would have bought her.

Do you not have any friends that are knowledgable with horses like this that can help? Will save you so much money.

I'm sure you have already done this, but have you had saddle/teeth/back/bridle/feet etc checked?
Not sure I am allowed to say this but I would take him to Richard Maxwell to check out - I don't mean the full sort your horse out process but to check if there is there anything causing pain. Most horses are not that bad without reason. Richard is probably within 2 hours of you so worth a trip.

Yes have had back saddle etc checked, to be honest even if she could be fixed i dont want to ride her again, i have spent enough money so far and got no where fast, and after the last rearing incident even if she came good again i wouldnt want to keep her so i am just looking to sell her now

I understand your reasons and respect you wanting to find somewhere else for her. Did you pay a lot?

Was the horse vetted/any blood tests taken?

Also, worst comes to worst, can you cut your losses and rehome her cheap to a home that wants to handle and turn around problem horses. It will be tricky though, in the ideal world, would be best suited to an experienced long term home to get to the bottom of things.

Well done for not wanting to ride though! If she rears and you do not feel you know 100% how to handle it, you're being very safe and I respect that 100%.

I know you have been through hell...you say that you dont want to get back on if she is fixed...but knowing the type of home she might end up in or the fact that another dealer might drug her etc...then are you in a position to do more investigation before passing her on?

I fear for horses like this, she may end up passed from home to home, she could really hurt someone, I respect the fact you do not want to get on her...I wouldn't either! but I doubt a reputable dealer would take her on.

I agree a project home might take her...but again...this is not always safe as some of the people are looking for cheap horses to pass on.

I dont know the full story...so to mention PTS is premature perhaps...but it did cross my mind (before I get jumped on I do not know the full story!!)

I agree with this totally. I might know someone who will help, I will PM you but hope something works out for the best!
