hi, my horse (a 17.2hh 15y old hunter type) has been diagnosed with arthritis in one of his knees after a month of on an off lameness. had xrays today and found that he has it. the vet is coming out again on thursday to inject the joint, then after injection to give him a couple of days off and then bring him back into work.
so.. she said to give him a good joint supplement as well, what do people recommend? thanks x

Hi, i use blue chip dynamic for my boy plus devils relief, they keep a lot less stuff than he is without. He is in full work with these.

wouldn;t want to recommend a particular joint supplement, it's trial and error, but I would compare contents for a like for like comparison. Which brings me to dynamic. I would be incredibly sceptical that blue chip dynamic does anything in the joint supplement department. I couldn;t find anywhere that said how much MSM/glucosamine there was in the product, so contacted them:
"Dynamic contains 3500mg/kg glucosamine and 3500mg/kg MSM". In literature, 10g of glucosamine a day seems to be the working dose (commonly the loading dose of products if listed)- which would mean you need to feed 2.86kg of dynamic a day!!!!!!!!!!! I'll let you draw your own conclusions on that one!

Yes it is trial and errror. I had a17.2 large hunter also. Big Lad!! Had arthritis in his fetlocks etc. Tried a few and ended up using the following. Equimins flexijoint with Super Codlavine. In winter added No Bute. But when it started to get worse over the years went on to Cortaflex instead of Flexijoint. Worked well with him and carried on riding out until he told me enough was enough and retired to field.

one of ours has very recently been diagnosed with arthritis in a coffin joint. when I asked the vets at the horspital about supplements they were pretty sceptical - saying that there were lots of extravagant claims made but very few real scientific studies done to support them. One that they did say had scientific evidence to show it gave some benefit was Gelatinaat by PrimeVal - again not cheap though £75 a tub!!

However, on a re-visit, the boss-orthopod said we could try cod liver oil as that often helps!

So, think you pays your money and takes your choice!!

7 year old thread damnation ;) :)

Thank you
My gelding is really bad coming downhill bucking and tearing
Bone scans flagged widening of the sacroiliac joints but very mild he has had these medicated but also in his one knee X-rays have shown two small cysts in the carpol joint
