My friend found her mare dead in the field this morning, blood on nose and anus :( (lovely mare knew her for 23 years ) , Daft question but mare is insured for death, will the insurance company just pay out for death or does she need a vet to see mare first? Said I would find out for her before she buries her.
 
I'm so sorry for your friend :(

I would think the vet would need to see her and give a cause of death either by observation or necropsy before the insurance would even consider paying out xx
 
So sorry to hear this :(

She needs a vet to see her if your friend wants to claim. It could be literally anything. The blood could well be a red herring, as unfortunately this is where the crows tend to go on a dead animal, see it on the sheep.

Can't help with the insurance question, but condolences to your friend. Its a terrible shock, happened with my dog just before Christmas so she has my utmost sympathy
 
Know it's odd but could she have been hit by lightening?

My friend's horse was and just dropped where he was hit, no marks, nothing.

Agree would need vet for the claim

Never thought of Lightening, not sure if there was a storm last night, she didn't wear shoes though?
 
Sorry for your friends loss. The mare will need a full post mortem and report doing from a vet to give to the insurance company along with a vet bill claim as they will charge for doing it. She needs to ring them and explain and the vets will arrange for the knacker man to collect her body and take it to where the vet will pm her ( usually the knacker mans premises or hunt kennels, sometimes an equine clinic), she will also need to ring the insurance company and inform them and get relevant forms. In the mean time if she can cover the mares body with a large tarpaulin and weigh it down with tyres or bricks then it will prevent unwanted wildlife interfering with her.
 
I think wearing shoes just raises the risk slightly. I'm not sure if my friend's had shoes or not. I'm guessing not as he wasn't ridden much.

We had a massive lightening storm yesterday in Hampshire.
 
A friend lost her aged mare. She was found dead in the field one evening when all was well earlier in the day but looks like she collapsed cantering down hill from the marks. The vet was needed to inspect her for the insurance but they didn't need PM. Vet reckoned aortic aneursym that burst so quick. We covered the body with a tarp weighted down by tyres to stop wildlife disturbing her.

re your insurance question , your friend needs to ring her company asap and let them know
my mare died suddenly in the field (she was found dead) and i had to get a vet out to find the cause
she then had to have a PM before the insurance co would pay out

mine died of a twisted gut and the insurance paid out no problem , i remember paying my vets a £10 admin fee to deal with the insurance co because i just couldn't do it at the time , everything was fine and i received a cheque in the post after a few weeks for her full value plus disposal costs

they didn't cover the cost of the PM but did ring and ask if i wanted the rest of my insurance premium back (i paid yearly in full) or if i wanted it to be moved to another horse
that was the NFU and they were brilliant in what was a really difficult time x
 
I am so very sorry to hear of this, your poor friend must be in a right state, I can not think what it must have been like to have found her like that. I agree with the others about the vet. Thinking of you all at this very hard time.
 
Very sorry for your friends loss, what a shock for her. Given the mares age, I would speak to the insurance company to make sure they will cover the cost of a pm. They may be happy with a vets death certificate as I'm guessing she was not insured for a large amount.
 
RIP mare what a lovely way for her to go instantly and out in the field. So sorry for your friends loss but it must have been quick and painless and that must be a comfort
 
yes you have to be careful as insurance may have specific rules, also be aware it is not OK to bury without permission from SEPA [Scotland] or the Authority in E&W. The horse must be a "pet" ie not used in trade, and no watercourse contamination.
