horse disposal/meatmen

Lovely offer there from mongoose11.
On a slightly different note, perhaps we could have a sticky or just some area where people who don't mind helping in theses terrible situations could say and note their area?
I'd be very happy to help/ be the last person to hold and feed carrots etc for someone's horse but did find it a bit difficult with my own.

OP, if you need someone to stay with your mare while this is done then I can travel up and help. It's not a problem, as long as you could arrange it for the weekend. I hate for anyone to feel they have to send the horse away because there is nobody there to support.

Seriously, the driving's no bother. Just say.

You. Are a gem.

Please, please don't let them take her away, have it done on site where she is comfortable with her surroundings. You don't need to be there, get the hunt in and they'll hold her - you can walk away. It's the final kindness you can do for her and you will feel better for having done right by her.

This ^^^^ - have been in your position, 10 years ago in fact, almost to the day - and so I know where you're coming from.

But, and I say this as lovingly and tenderly as possible, you MUST repeat MUST do the right thing for your mare, now at this time when she needs you the most. It is the most awful time for you as well, and that is why the local hunt would be the very best option IME. They are professionals, do it all the time, and therefore at a time like this are the best people for the job, cool, collected, and detached from the situation.

They will do the job well and correctly, and you won't have to worry about disposal of the remains, and you will not need to be there other than to point out which horse it is if there are others in the yard.

PLEASE don't send your mare away........ you'll regret for ever that you did so.

Such a kind and unselfish offer Mongoose11.

OP, if you're not comfortable staying with your horse, and I think we all understand your reasons, please take up Mongoose11's offer or ask the BHS about Friends and the End, you'll feel so awful if you send her away.

Agreeing with others on here that it might be of benefit to have a "sticky" for people, like a network around the country, that would "stay till the end" in a situations like the OP's. I've got a lovely friend, who does this for other people, not just for horses but for dogs & small-animals as well........... I might just need to use her quite soon unfortunately as my poor old dog might be needing that "service" soon....... :(

I've held many a horse for people, some I know well some I don't. I tend to be very level headed in a PTS situation (either with my own horse or someone else's). I'd happily be there to hold someone's horse if they needed it in my area

Steph is the Yorks Equine Crematorium. She will come out to you and so long as you make sure that she has the right horse, she prefers to do the deed without the owner present ( some people get very upset). You will need to pay her at the time. She and her staff are very professional, excellent with the horses, efficient and knowledgeable. You will be able to find the number on the website. Not all hunts have a collection service, unfortunately.

This.

Steph put one of mine to sleep just before Christmas. She offers an excellent service and is recommended by a number of vets.

Sorry to hear of your very sad situation and well done Mongoose.

I would not send any animal away, I also would not entertain anyone, recommended or not, who refused to have anyone present when the deed was done. Its a personal choice and if I could not stay, I would want a friend to. I have always stayed, this has meant that I was sure that the passing was peaceful and that was a great comfort to me.
Never underestimate the power of the unknown. if you cannot be there, having someone you trust who can be and let you know all was well
(in the circumstances) is invaluable.

Really sorry to high jack this thread but was just wondering, will firms mentioned on here PTS even if there is nothing wrong with the horse? Say if you can no longer afford to keep the horse but can't /don't want to sell on?

Yes they will do as you want, it is not their job to ask questions or for the owner to justify the decision, you are paying the bill so they will do the job as required.

Yes, it is none of their business why you want to pts the horse. You are paying for the service.
