A friend needs a horse dispatching, based in Worcestershire, nr Alcester.

Who would you use, in terms of huntsmen etc? Does anyone have direct experience of Phillip Smith-Maxwell?
Is there anyone we should avoid like the plague?!

The owner would prefer the horse to go by bullet, and isn't fussed about what happens to the carcass; but knowing the horse is being dealt with at the end by a compassionate and experienced person is an absolute MUST.

Any pointers appreciated. :)

Horrible for your friend - you have my sympathy

If you're happy/prefer the humane killer (bullet) then your local hunt should be able to perform this service for you. I would suspect you're on the edge of the Worcestershire Hunt, Warwickshire or Croome and West Warwickshire. Some hunts have the facilities to deal with the carcass, some don't. (It is also the cheapest)

Philip is brilliant - he knows all the local hunts, is calm, quiet, tactful and very sympathetic - I couldn't recommend him highly enough

I would suggest that you (or your friend) give him a ring and talk it through with him - he can recommend your best options.

Hope it goes as well as it can :)

Yes I'd recommend Phillip. He did my old mare, nice and quiet with her, very quick and professional. She never knew it happened. Better than injection. He takes the carcass away.

Thanks both, very helpful.

I've had to deal with my own horses being PTS, but this is the first time I've been involved in one that's not hugely local, so I don't have any of my usual contacts to call on. It makes the whole thing so much more daunting when you don't know who to trust....!

Second that. Phillip is fabulous. He came to take my mare away when she died in the field. A lovely quiet caring man. My friend used him as well for her pony and he even took his hat off in respect. He had a chat with me as he had just lost one of his. They use him as one of the ambulances at Badminton as well. Very sorry for your friends loss.

Worcs. and the croome wont do the deed. i have used mick wills from grafton bereavement services, he is very quiet with the horses and nice with the people. he too takes away, you have a choice if you want the ashes back. Sorry for your impending loss, never an easy time.

So sorry to hear about your friends situation :( I've also had a few dealings with Phillip and he's a lovely man, very professional and knows what he's doing.
