Horse DNA found in beef burgers on sale in Tesco and Lidlt

Yeah but these processing plants aren't licensed to deal with horses, so something illegal is going on somewhere regardless of the argument about the logic of eating one animal and not another.

So, if it's illegal, it' highly likely that the horses are not slaughtered in the best of conditions...
 
Yeastless Rusk is simply unleavened bread that has been baked and dried before being ground into a fine crumb. You can also use regular breadcrumbs but using Rusk gives a good and consistent texture to the sausage, it also retains the moisture within the sausage better than breadcrumbs giving you a more succulent sausage, and finally because it is yeastless it gives the sausage a longer shelf-life.

This is why its important to buy British!
 
Or even better, local, where you can know the provenance of the meat. Products can be labelled 'British' if they are just processed here, they can come from overseas.
 
All the more reason to stop shopping at these giant monopolies!

Go local, support your local butcher, grocer, fishmonger and boycott the retail park lot!

I think this is a trump for local trade... I'm actually rather happy this was exposed :)
 
Quite correct Slightly Foxed. Scottish smoked Salmon can be Salmon from anywhere but smoked in Scotland.Smoked Scottish Salmon is the real macoy but how many of the general public are aware of the subtle differences? British doesn't necessarily mean what we are led to believe.

Yep, bloody outrageous I think. However, do most people care as long as the price is right?
 
Makes you wonder what's in the rest of their foodstuffs. I dislike Tescos all they've done is kill off the little shops and town centres. For this reason some people have no choice but to shop in these supermarkets. As has been said before support your local butcher etc.
 
Oh how lovely would it be to see tesco's all boarded up and queues outside the bakers, butchers and grocers again... People talking to each other, eating local food and being healthier.

It's about time we turned our backs on cheap, processed food and started eating real food.

According to research, we waste 50% of the food we buy... So that makes all those buy one get one free deals and offers seem... Well... Not as cheap as you might think???? It was all a ploy to get you to spend more in the first place...
 
Slightly foxed. Do we know this? I thought there were more than one supplier and all were European? Can I have a link if more has come out, on phone so not an easy search!

As for buying British.. the practices over here are quite dire and a carefully worded label means nothing. Agree with slightly foxed and tallyho.

I don't eat fish but work in marine industry and am surprised how many people think a dyed fish 'looks fresher' no ta!

As much as everyone says they should know what's in the meat, I bet more would rather not and carry on in ignorant bliss... how many people who have bought value burgers actually look at the ingredients... The ones listed (we sold very very cheap burgers at a previous job and the beef burgers had more than a couple of different types of meat listed, no more than about 10% of each) are enough to put me off value meat!
 
If I was ME and given horse meat then someone told me what it was. I would make myself puke. Sorry I could not just carry on say oh well. Fingers down the throat, but that is me.
The idea of eating horse makes me feel ill:(.
 
Just posted a different thread if its not been mentioned but I wonder where the equine meat came from as I presume they can trace back if the origin was uK via wonderful passport system..........?

Seriously, I think if you pay pence for food, you get s****t
 
You can trace each individual ingredient in a packet of biscuits right down when the oats were rolled, the day they were harvested etc.. so it's possible to do with meat without the need of a microchip ;)
 
Well my friend was taken into hospital today after eating a tesco burger..... don't worry she's in a stable condition :p

Tbh I don't think it would bother me and I'm sure I've probably eaten horse in France (not intentionally) and definately ate some kind of animal you can ride in Tunisia, probably camel and found that out after I'd eaten it.
However, the thought of eating tesco burgers turns my stomach anyway.
 
Heard (not proven fact as far as I'm aware) the "meat" of whatever species that was added to make the burgers originated in Poland. Brings back memories of The Cadburys fiasco when many people contracted serious food poisoning. What was found to be the cause? Imported milk, from guess where..... Poland!
